Question is, will he be able to win prize money as a "pro triathlete" which in school similar to how college football/basketball players do that get drafted to mlb and play minor league baseball over the summer while still competing collegiately in the other sports

Richard Kandie - runs a lot of road races, sub-15 5Ks, 1:06x half marathon and 2:20x marathons.
Adrian Myers - 3:44/1:47 PRs
Todd Ptacek - is a Notre Dame sophomore, ran the steeplechase and 4x8 at the Big East Champ and has 3:50 1500 PR
Moses Wawera - 3:38/13:57 PR from several years ago, 2:23 Marathon and 1:06 Half recently
Shawn Lucas - 3:53 1500 and 3:31 1000m from his college days
Nelson and Quinn are from the area and have run pretty fast as well. Not today though.

Ptacek isn't even on the ND roster...The 8th place guy Currie went to ND and has run 1:48/2:24 though. I don't think Myers has run 3:44/1:47 either...maybe 1:48/3:50?
Why should he compete in the NCAA? He trains and races farily independently and quite professionally. Why wouldn't he just sign with a major shoe companay and take classes along the way? Or, perhaps her could be offered a full ride at Oregon with a nice contract waiting at graduation?
I ran this course today. Got 5:17. It's about 5 to 10 seconds faster than a course that is just flat I'd guess. Lukas was FLYING. I was watching the finish. This was a very fun race and events.
By looking at the compared Track PR's, anywhere from 20 to 40 seconds were shaved off by the downhill. Which means "V" might have ran anywhere from 4:36 to 4:16 given a flat track race. Great time as a 17 yr old Sophomore in H.S.. That said, he still has a ways to go to be considered one of the best high school milers of all time. I am a fan favorite of Jim Ryun, Gerry Lindgren and Pre who all ran under 4:10. Kids all over the country in the past 2 weeks have ran under 4:10 for their respective State Championship meets. Also, does this mean we're going to start putting an astrick* next to a new form of record? All-time high school mile record: Alan Webb 3:53 (*Lukas Verzbikas 3:56 DH).... I can just see it now.

I say he could run around 4:05 right now, possibly faster.
This is a very fast high school time but I'd be very surprised if there wasn't a significant amount of time shaved off by the downhill as Kandie just ran a 1:06.x half last Sunday in Fargo. I'd be very surprised if he could come back 1 week after a half on a course of an legitimacy and run 10 sec. slower than his time here. Either way though, Lukas's time was very fast for a high schooler on the roads!

On the front page of the race website it says winnings by high school runners will be distributed to their school's scholarship fund. That's why I wrote that the guy's school will receive a nice contribution to their scholarship fund. Everyone is aware of rules for amateurs and students I was only pointing out that $5K is a pretty good day on the roads. Lighten up fellas.
Dumbasses, we all know how much a downhill adds. Lukas could probably run ~4:06 right now. He's run 8:49 in the 3200

Actually, Ptacek has run 3:44 for 1500, 4:04 mile and 8:41 steeple. The guy who said 5-10 sec fast is probably right.
Pat Quinn ran 4:10ish and 14:15ish in college. Not too shabby. Recently, he ran 25:00 at the Shamrock Shuffle 8k. Ptacek is a ND graduate who as already mentioned has run low 8:40's in the steeple.
Judging from the DH Mile and Luke V's 6 x 400 in 57's on Flotrack I'd say he is in sub 4:05 shape.

It was about 87 degrees at the time of the race. Very humid. Some guys handled the heat better than others. Comparing pr's of the other participants is a very crude proxy. With that being said, I think Lukas has proven that he is in sub 4 minute shape, regardless of the net downhill.
