In the grand LRC tradition I'll reply without reading the actual article. I mean, if it doesn't say what I think it does, well, dammit, it should.

(a) I don't know if "being vegan" is so extreme. But if they're not talking about being vegan, they're talking specifically about Scott Jurek, right? Doesn't he take his involvement with food pretty far, e.g. milling his own flour, growing some significant portion of what he eats, that sort of thing? That's a world different from microwaving some white rice and bean burritos.

(b) "Extreme" is relative. "Extreme" training mileage is one thing to competitive distance runners - pick whatever number N you like, it's certainly well into triple digits - and for the NY Times general readership I'd think N/2 is "extreme" or close to it anyway.

Because a lot of people avoid meat not because they don't like it, but for other reasons.

I live in the real world and thats the best I can do at the moment. Both Boca and Morningstar have tiny amounts of the "forbidden fruits" but its way better than the traditional diet. I'm not a purist. 100 MPW is great but doing 99 is pretty good too. "Close enough for government work"

Wow, look at how healthy you are, you buy packaged food and microwave it, but you're a vegan so you're better than everyone else.

You going to tell me that's worse for me than your TV dinner diet because it's not vegan?

I wonder how many of the "barefooters" are also vegans and ultrarunners... see any similarities????

Drink a 1/2 gallon of milk and see what happens. You produce a TON of saliva. Saliva is a powerful germ hoster, which is one of the major reasons we expel a ton of it when we're sick. Our bodies produce it to carry out the pathogens. The more saliva you produce when you're NOT sick, the greater chance that saliva will bring germs into your body.

Wait, if the body produces saliva to move pathogens *out* of the body, then how can saliva bring pathogens *into* the body? And if it does bring pathogens in, why would the body produce more when you're sick and your immune system is weakened? I believe you mean mucus, not saliva. Saliva is used in the digestive process, while mucus lines our respiratory system. That is what we cough up when we have a cold.

I don't understand how anything you just mentioned for a meal is really healthy. All of the dinner items you are eating are highly processed. Isn't the whole goal of healthy eating to eat to as close to natural as possible. A huge percentage of vegans I know pretty much just eat like crap.

Fool, Ovo-Lacto means that they DO eat eggs and dairy.

Saliva is a very effective method the body uses to prevent disease. The saliva protects internal membranes that are most susceptible to infection by viruses, bacteria, and fungus by flushing them either out of the body or into the stomach where they are destroyed by gastric juice. If dairy does as you claim and stimulate production of saliva, then it would help prevent disease, not cause it.

You should see the mouth of someone with inadequate saliva. It is a cesspool of gum disease and cavities and no amount of tooth brushing or mouthwash will help.

Although you may feel better with no dairy, you shouldn't use pseudoscience as the basis.

That's because they're Americans first and what's readily available on retail shelves is going to be a reflection of our corporate-controlled government's subsidy policies rather than people's desire for better food.
