This audio interview with Mark Zeigler is a pretty good. Zeigler is a reporter who's followed a lot of the athletic doping scandals and offers insight into why Merritt might have been taking DHEA. The seemingly most likely scenario is that it helps counter some of the side effects of anabolics. Be forwarned the program is about 50 minutes long but you will know a great deal more about doping in endurance sport if you give it a listen.

this is the real fear about Merritt - that he is doing god knows what else, and is planning to use this DHEA test as a straw man.
In other words, he uses XYZ, which is a performance booster but undetectable in most ways. But just in case it is detected in some way, he can now point to this ahem product as the culprit, not the actual drug.
That's why you have to have rules and stick by them. Giving merritt a pardon for this would be wrong.

I think this is why the hammer would come down... DHEA isn't the thing, it's the next steroid for which there is currently no test that they're worried about.
I have no idea whether or not DHEA can actually mask other steroids in drug tests, even if it counters side effects (as someone said earlier)... time to listen to that podcast.

Actually he's undergoing an investigation to see if the drugs were really from a penis enhancer, whether he was aware of them, etc., etc., so the case isn't really closed...
Read the other thread on this same topic. There was good info on why an athlete would take DHEA even though it is not a very good PED itself.
