Man, you can't compare. There's fewer runners and jocks in general for any sport outside of LA/SD. It's torture to go outside all year around in the USA. That's what make LA/SD the sports capitol of the world. In fact 1/3rd of the Berlin IAAF WC 2009 medals where from L.A. residents.

San Diego maybe has quite a few because of the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center (and most of them are from other states, only there to prepare for the Olympics)....but the only So Cal Olympians other than these normally lose their medals because they get caught with drug testing. Fact.
there's so many clean socal medalists to take up the slack it's no prob when a lanced athlete is popped. xc/t&f is such a massive undertaking across the southland at all levels. there are so many people involved here i constantly meet local people that i never met who have been involved for as many decades as i have been involved. even the obsure hidden away, oxy relays last week has more entrants than major meets in other parts of the u.s.

Sure you can dump boats of jamaicans and flash in the pan high school track athletes families into Penn once a year, only to dissappear when their kids go off to colleges or don't.
Don't get me wrong Penn is an amazing zoo once a year.
Interesting question is if you took the Jamaicans, Athletes and Athletes families out of the stands a Penn how many american track fans would you actually have?
