400-800m way different events energy wise. 5k and 10k are almost the same energy wise. If you run sub 13, you are going to be right around 27 for the 10k if you run when your in the same shape and you run a a half dozen 10ks.

There are only a couple good 10k's per year, so what exactly would it have cost Teg to do one? Or BK at his peak prior to 1999? One 10k is not going to affect your season negatively unless you're prone to stress fractures like Ritz.
Craig Miller has a twin brother. His name is Brad. I think he runs the 800m.

The timing was right for Solinsky (not for Teg, he is coming back from a minor injury). Teg's time will come (hopefully, if not this year, next year)
Teg will break 13 and 27 this summer in some Scandinavian meet in July or August. (if healthy).
I think jagar said in the interview on flotrack that he is actually coming off a stress fracture.
The answer is Yes. This is a great run for Solinsky and will still be great when his training partner runs faster. I think Tegenkamp is a more natural fit for the 10K and Solinsky the 5k. I don't forsee Solinsky running alot of 10k's, but do see Tegenkamp at some point doing that.
In the same circumsances I could very much see Teg sitting right on that train with Solinsky and being in the hunt.
One thing you have to remember is everything went right for Chris. That's the difference for these guys at getting under 27:00 or not. Look at how many times BK was just over 13 minutes. It's the same here.
In this case Solinsky repeatedly refers to 2 big factors making that possible:
1) Rupp
2) The adrenaline he got when his stitch went away and he knew he was still in it that close to the finish.
He had everything right. I still see Teg right there in it with him and finishing at 27:00 +/- a few seconds. I also think Ritz and Rupp would have been.

Of course, and many others "can" break 27. The surprising thing about the breaking of this barrier by an American is how long it took for someone to do it.
I look forward to seeing a number of Americans under 13 and 27 in the next few years.

Fair questions and I would love to see Teg, Solinksy, Ritz, and Rupp all go at it in a 10k.
I'm sorry friends, but Matthew Tegenkamp does not run the 10K, you see. He has often been asked to even do fun-run road races of 10,000 meters, but he refrains. Because there is no 10,000 meters that Matthew Tegenkamp will run.
It is not of vanity or of fear. It is simply impossibly from a physics standpoint. On one hand, you have Teg. On the other, you have the 10K. Has it ever been any more clear?

Because he is too big and heavily muscled with big bones? (for a distance runner, that is); to go that far.

Teg is a more natural fit that Solinsky? What's your reasoning on this? Teg has faster prs at the lower end (1500, mile, 3000, 2mile) and possesses a searing kick off a slower pace. Chris is fast, but has not shown quite that speed at the shorter distances. It's hard to compare 5k times, because Chris' pr is from 2007 and he didn't get in those fast late season races last year at 5k, so there's a big gap there. And now Chris has the mark in the 10k.
But for many years, people have known how durable the kid is, how he rarely gets injured, and how he can handle big gobs of miles. Teg - somewhat injury prone (although better now than in college) and not a high mileage guy. To me, these factors suggest that Chris may actually be the better fit for 10k (not taking body size into account here).
