What I don't understand is why Salazar would go to such trouble to optimize an AR attempt when Rupp supposedly has so much potential. We know he has bigger goals, so why not just let the AR come while working towards those goals? Rupp doesn't strike me as the type that needs this treatment in order to gain confidence.

I don't know who Tewbow is, but I disagree. Rupp has been a clutch performer like no one else - if he thinks this is the right time to do a competitive time trial, let him have it. I'm sure that he'll be in every Euro 10,000 and probably several 5000s too. There he'll have to show up no matter what the weather. An AR record attempt in April...why do it unless the conditions are right?

Didn't I read that they were flying in Mathew Kisorio from Kenya for the 10,000m? Are they planning on using him Saturday or just sending him home again?

agreed, this sport needs elite's to set examples in their disciplines and this lame time-trial/pollen/wind excuse just makes Rupp appear well more like a pussy, what if I don't know Payton Manning refused to play football at a certain stadium because it was too windy or the pollen count was too high, realize different situation (quarterback to distance runner) but what I mean is elite's need to suck it up and compete, Rupp certain looks like an AR in the 10km will happen someday but the Stanford 10km is looking like a Superbowl 10km right now (yea I know missing a few MVP's but still loaded none the less) and if he or his coach has any balls that is the race for him, it's just my opinion I know but I really don't give a shit if he runs the AR 10km at some time-trial in Eugene I would much rather watch the Stanford 10km even if is slow because of obvious reasons(should be a great race, Superbowl like somewhat)

This is why so many people dislike Oregon fans. If you don't get the record you have another time because IT IS April. Suck it up Rupp and run Stanford.

They should put a garden hoop house type structure over lane 1 to help keep out the wind and allergens. And here's my idea for rabbits: You have the standard first-5K rabbit. The second rabbit starts the race, but just jogs for the first 13 minutes, then takes up the lead and sees our hero through all the way to the finish line.

And we'll like totally get some central heating in that thing and maybe some tailwind down the home and back stretch. Heck tail wind all around, and we can put small misting stations around just incase his little head ever gets too hot.

That said, Galen Rupp is a talented individual and I respect him a lot. I just don't like that he's getting exceptions made for him.

As for the rabbits, I think tiny lightbulbs all the way around the track would be the way to go, and they light up consecutively on the pace you want, just stay with the lights. Or maybe a cart in lane two with a very precise speedometer and cruise control. They could also pump oxygen into the air at track level to try to counter pollen and increase the efficiency of his breathing.

I'm not one of the serial Rupp bashers, but sometimes you have to just show up and run. This shit gives the sport a badd name.

I ran in Mountain View yesterday. I was scared to breath. I haven't seen anything like it. It was raining "tree stuff". Sheets of it.

However, it should be fine by the weekend. The wind will die down.

The cart is a good idea. Looks like we'll need to make the hoop house 4 lanes wide. There could also be a cart a little behind him with a fan so that there's always a tailwind. And the hoop house material should amplify sound so that it sounds like 80,000 people are cheering. We'll probably also need a recording of people shouting "Galen, Galen!" if the crowd isn't up for 27 minutes of supportive shouting.

While I find it a bit strange I think a lot of it is because it is Rupp and it is in the media, and he's reportedly going for the AR. If it was a less scrutinized elite runner they may make these same kind of decisions but nobody would even no about it.

Lets be real about a few things here, Rupp is not running for Oregon or any other team or the peanut gallery. Rupp is running for Rupp now and he's following the same tried and true advisor that got him 3+ ncaa runner up spots, 6 ncaa titles, 2 world teams, 1 olympic team and a bucket full of jr. usa, ncaa and even american records.

When was the last time Rupp "flopped" at a major race? I can't even think of a single time. Who else can you say that about? So criticize their methods all you want but you might want to examine the hypocracy in that. Criticizing the methods of someone who ALWAYS shows up at the right time with the big performance, that just don't make sense when nearly every other runner flops in races every year.

Some of you would like to use German Fernandez or Scotty Bauhs or whoever else as guys who "just show up and run

' and aren't so fancy but if you really think about the results I think you can admit that hasn't exactly paid off.

And to the knucklehead who said just go win Cardinal, he did that 3 years ago as a much inferior runner. He doesn't need a win at Cardinal for anything unless they are bringing in 27:15 guys to beat.

Seems like the Oregon native and U of O grad wants to set an AR in Eugene in front of that crowd much more than Palo Alto, CA. That doesn't sound so weird.

Guys who approach running like Rupp in my mind are Geb, Lagat & Bekele. They don't race haphazard or just because they wanted to several weeks before. They race when it is right for the immediate and for the upcoming season.

Rupp and Salazars record of decison making is 100% against the peanut gallery thus far. My guess is the peanut gallery is just pissed off that his advantages are being shown again, the number 1 advantage that he has the talent and work ethic to be in a spot to make these decisions.

simple reason is we are fans of track and field, if he were in the Stanford race it's makes a loaded field even more loaded and therefore a must better race to watch, using my prev example of payton manning - it's like him saying f*** that I'm not playing sunday I'm going to play beach football on sat instead

Rupp and Salazar are just enforcing this "prima dona" attitude just like they did with the 5km at the trials

you know previously I wished Rupp all the best but now I hope if gets hit by a large pollen drop and sneezes till he craps himself

I can see it now. Rupp doesn't set the record and Salazar and Rupp say "Well you know the rain last night combined with too much O2 in the air really slowed me down". No wonder the Africans beat us; instead of just going out to run we are worried about pollen levels in the air. I have never heard of such nonsense. What a paper tiger.
