This is not a time will tell thing. Nike does these kind of commercials as one offs and moves on, playing to our short attention span and short memories.
But the parodies are great and Nike should have thought about that because they made it so easy. I like the Morgan Freeman Shawshank Redemption one the best, brilliant...
The only point I'm making is that just because the ad is being talked about, doesn't mean it will be a success. You and I could come up with all kinds of ideas for ads that would be widely talked about, but if they are offensive to the majority of the customers, they aren't going to actually get more people to buy our crap.
Don't think that the braniacs at Nike can't make a big strategic mistake. They can. They went all in on Tiger because he's the greatest golfer in the world, perhaps the greatest golfer in history. And now they are betting that his personal failings will only cause some short term damage to his image, and that in the long term he's still a winning bet. That's fine. I can't fault Nike for coming to that conclusion. But it is a strategic risk, because Tiger may in fact not change much as a person and may in fact continue to do stupid things in the future to hurt his image.
What I do fault Nike for is not using good judgment in making and marketing this ad. I think it's in poor taste. That's my opinion.
