2010 Alan Webb Prediction Thread

Alan Webb will not run this year but will run a world record in the outdoor mile next year in 2011. Even though he runs a world record, people will then still continue to say that he sucks and eats too much fast food.

Has it really been three years since his remarkable 3:46 mile? It now seems like another time.

The people that say Webb sucks at championship races are morons. He is a great racer, he just is never in top form at a lot of the big international championships. He has however won several US titles including beating Lagat in a tactical 1500 in 07. In 08 he didn't make the team because he was obviously out of shape and hurt. I've watched that race several times and he grimaces early in the race. I've had a severe achilles injury before and it sucks. Anyways, people who say his tactics suck or he can't race are morons. In 07 Worlds he struggled through the heats and tied up in the final because he was tired and burnt out not because his tactics sucked.

Any tendon injury is serious. The reason McGuire gave up baseball was his sports doctor told him he risked a knee tendon rupture. If any tendon snaps you are in deep trouble. In fact before WW2 any patella tendon rupture was a disabling injuring. If you look at old post WW1 films you may see injured veterans kicking the healthy leg in front of them to order to move the injury leg forward. 60 years ago a knee or achilles tendon rupture meant you could not walk without a cane. In the mid 50s after the Korean war doctors where able to reattach the patella tendon. Many WW2 veterans would had not been able to walk could have this operation and walk for the first time in nearly a decade. Now it is common place for athletes who rupture their ACL and Petella tendon to compete again.

In short don't mess around with any tendon injury.

I have Webb setting the world record in the Burrito Mile.

I have him beating joey Chestnut and finishing second to Kobiashi in the hot dog eating contest.

I have him being a "regional class" competitor in a "Pump and Run".

He will continue to keep the "Hair Club for Men" in business.

He will continue to train faster than he races.

He needs another year to get the contortion out and let the "Salazar Sauce" kick in.

I'd say it's a toss up between Cook and Schumacher, and THEN Salazar.

Sure, he has Rupp (who he's had for year and years), and then Dathan, who yeah, broke 13, but like Salazar said himself, all the training that he did in the past is what got him to run that. It was just Salazar's peaking that was better. But now Dathan is already hurt, Rupp is constantly riding the line or hurt/sick, Adam Goucher hasn't done a thing for years.

I think if you stack it up, Schumacher and Cook have had way more success in the last few years than Salazar has.

If anything Ritz would have broken 13 in that exact same race under Hudson.

All seriousness aside, I thought that Webb was still working through injury problems. Does anyone have actual information on Webb's current status?

In any case, I wish him well. Even though I (and others) accurately predicted in 2006 that he would not make the 2008 Olympic squad, I still think that he's a wonderful talent, an exciting racer, and very definitely a plus for The Sport.

...though I still think he could be Olympic champ in triathlon.

So I was way off with my 1500 prediction, but I think in the past couple of days we have seen that Alan is already in the discussion of best current middle distance runner in America and potential AR breaker from 800-5K. As much as haters gonna hate, when Alan Webb is healthy and running well, American track and field is a whole lot more competitive and exciting. Keep up the good work, Alan and Alberto!
