This stuff about Bobby Andrews kills me. He is obviously a good runner but think of all the other NCAA champs her were so much faster. Mr Andrews is enjoying a void of super fast 800m runners in the NCAA now. Yes there is great depth at 1:46, but Jose Parilla, M Everett, J Cruz A Bile, E Jones, P Ereng etc.. are some names that reflect a time when there were Oly finalists in NCAA 800m race

I assume the national record holder and first ever to break 1:50 is talking INDOOR right? Shame only 15% of the nation runs indoor track compared to outdoor.
But I digress, I still fail to see how high school times and twice outleaning Andrew Wheating in the 800 not running his best says hes going to be a world leading miler?

He just ran the #3 US Junior time for 800. Just about puts him on the IAAF all-time Junior list for the event, along with Cruz, Borz, etc. He will likely be on that list after the NCAA finals.
Coe, Cram, and Ovett are NOT on that list (but Jim Ryun is).

One has to only look at the defending champ to see how talentless the NCAA 800 is right now. But that's not Robbie's problem.
What is all this excitement over the NCAAs and Andrews. Asbel Kiprop has a gold medal in the 1500 and rann 1:43 all before he was 20.
Seb Coe had .46 400 meter speed. I don't think RA or any of his modern day contemporaries has anywhere close to that kind of leg speed. Because of that, their success in the 800/1500 will be limited.

Coe had 46.87 second 400 speed to be precise. RA has that ridiculous final kick--just watch him run by Wheating like Wheating was standing still. It wouldn't surprise me if his 400 is faster than Coe's.

I don't know that he has 3:29 potential. But in the 800....

Actually Coe ran several sub 46.0 relay legs, his fastest being 45.5, which is worth close to 46.0 for a stationary start. I doubt very much that Andrews can run a 46.0 flat 400m at the moment. His kick maybe good, but it's not on thye same level as Coe's, who could run under 12.0 secs for the final 100m in 1:46/1:47 races.

RA's "modern day contemporaries" have better leg speed than Coe. Look at Rudisha and Kaki.
David Rudisha ran 45.5 for an open 400 in Feb. 2010 and is just 21 years old! He just crushed Coe's 800m record from 1979 at Bislett. Kaki is just 20 years old, too and he beat Coe's record at Bislett, too.

You think breaking a 31 year old record by less than 0.3 is worthy of the word "crushed"!
Rudisha & Kaki had each other to push them over the second lap, Coe had no one within 30m. You don't think the Oslo track now might be a little faster than it was in the late 70's? Of course it's quicker, probably by a couple of tenths each lap at least. It's laughable that because they've run faster than someone 31 years ago, who most probably would have run sub 1:41.0 with the faster tracks, better pacing and more competition that the current crop have, that they must have faster 400m speed. Yes, Rudisha has, but not by much, and that doesn't mean he has a better "kick" in an 800m race. Coe's speed endurance would be superior.
There is no stats on Kaki running as fast as Coe at 400m. He would appear to be an 800/1500 type.
I certainly wouldn't be surprised if both do surpass Coe's fastest 800 time, probably later this season when it reaches its peak in August. However, Coe also ran his 1:41 in early June, like these two. If they get quicker as the season progresses then that only underlines the fact that Coe too would have run faster than 1:41.7 later that same season had he: - 1) the motivation to break a time that was already out of reach of the rest of the world; 2) Had enough fast paced opportunities to do so and not chased the Mile record as well.
Johnny Gray had faster 400m pb than Coe, that doesn't mean he could out kick him off any pace. To do that he'd have needed 3:30 1500 ability as well.
