Depending how recent you want to know, but Meredith Rainey (Harvard '90) won the 800m at Outdoors NCAAs in 1990 and became a 2-time Olympian. Before her freshman year in college, the last time she ran track was during middle school.

Excuse me, but she was a 2-time NCAA Champion in the 800m (indoors 1990, outdoors 1989)

I'm not sure how you define "walk-on" but I think John Scherer, a 3 time NCAA champion at Michigan (2 outdoor 10k titles and a 5k indoor title, wasn't on scholarship for his first couple years.

Not having a scholarship and being a walk-on are two completely different things.
and just too toot her horn a little bit more she's a double major biology/biochemistry with a near 4.0 (if not a 4.0) GPA and is one of the nicest people you will ever meet.
I've heard rumors Jen Toomey walked onto Tufts Cross Country team, and quit after the coach kept telling her she was running too fast, and then became one of our best mid distance runners ever time wise, although only for a few years. Not sure if that's true or not about the cross country. I know she wsa a diver for tufts before she took up running seriously.
Exactly, a walk-on is someone who is not recruited by the coach, scholarship or otherwise. Therefore they have to "walk-on" to the track for the first try out of sorts. Wheating was recruited to Oregon, as are most of the IVY runners that were mentioned.

Some good responses on this. Just curious about coaches who would recruit athletes without offering them any assistance. Does this happen a lot? Do they pretty much tell these athletes that they "might" get something down the road if they perform well? How does that work?
Josh McAdams was a walk-on at BYU and was the national champion in the 2006 steeplechase. Not only was he a walk-on but he was not even given a locker at first when he tried out. But with time he was eventually given a roster spot.

Highschool PR was 2:16. She is a neighbor and close friend of my daughter's.
She was third in last year's USA championships but couldn't make the world qualifying time of 2:00. Her best was 2:00.5

yeah, Josh Mcadams was a walkon at BYU. built like a wrestler.... works like a horse. NOBODY WORKS HARDER THAN JOSH MCADAMS, NOBODY!!!!
josh mcadams went to belmont university right out of high school before heading out on his mission. he was a scholarship athlete at belmont. after that he went to byu. so he was not really a 'walk-on' but rather a 'transfer'.
Obviously running 2:00 three years after a 2:15 HS PB is astounding, but 2:15 in HS would have earned her a scholarship at many DI schools. At a school like Tennessee 2:15 probably won't earn you a scholarship, but I assume Phoebe chose on her own to attend for academic or athletic reasons no matter of financial assistance. I'll bet money she had scholarship options. By any means, she's been impressive as a collegiate runner.
