GF may not be a miler, but he has shown himself easily capable of 3:35. Only ~70 performances have been clocked faster indoors than his 3:55.02 but more than 2000 have been recorded <=3:35.4. Sure, the indoor mile is not contested as often, but a 1900+ performance difference speaks for itself.
Furthermore, he crushed 3:35 man Dorian Ulrey in his wire-to-wire NCAA victory; the 3:39.00 winning time taken out of context misrepresents the talent of everyone involved.
Here's the real truth to the matter:
Gregson trains as a professional runner.
Fernandez trains as a Collegiate runner.
As soon as German goes pro, we'll see drastic improvement and times equivalent to a 19 year old 3:35 (which is incredible in it's own right).
Ulrey was battling sickness coming into the meet. I think Fernandez is definitely capable of a time faster than 3:39. I think we all know that.
But, first things first, we should be concerned about Fernandez's ability to stay healthy. Things aren't going too well with him, but I hope he comes back into form this spring.
While German is racing as a collegiate Ryan is getting pro experience racing big meets, against world class opposition. When German does go pro he is going to need 2-3 years to adjust tactically because he has never been in a situation where he gets pummelled around and dragged along.
By the end of this year Ryan would have been to world champs, commonwealth games, and have two seasons of european racing under his belt... when he does make the inevitable step to very low 3.30's he will have the experience and wisdom to make themost of his great talent in his prime years.

What was just as impressive to me as Ryan's time and race tactics was his interview afterward where he talked about the past year of training and racing required to break is previous PR.
He showed maturity and deflected some of the pressure when he stated that it may take him another year or two of training and racing to break his time.
Does anybody know anything about his coach, because it seemed as if he was speaking for himself? When I hear top American athletes (young and old) talk about their plans they always talk about what their coach has in mind.
And I agree that this kid is gaining the international experience that should give him an advantage over runners like German.

You call a meet in Australia in Febuary a big meet with world class competition? Give me a break! German runs against faster guys at NCAA's and USA's. And as far as Gregson going to world champs, the only experience he has gotten at these meets is how to get destroyed by much faster runners, like at world xc.

If by getting "pummelled" you mean finishing 1/2 a minute behind German at Amman and later finishing close to last in his 1500 heat at Berlin, then yes, he has much more experience than Fernandez.
