He's a year old for his grade. Most people graduate when they're 18 and he'll be 19. But who really cares. And also, stop comparing him to German who was only 17, that is not common.
Alan Webb turned 18 in the January of his senior year.
Dathan Ritzenhein turned 18 in the December of his senior year.
Ryan Hall turned 18 in the October of his senior year.
Verzbicas will turn 18 in the January of his junior year.
He's one grade behind most of the kids his own age.
Fernandez was especially young for his grade. Hall was 18 years, eight months old, when he ran 4:02 to break Michael Stember's state meet record. Fernandez was 17 years, seven months old when he broke that record. Had Hall and Fernandez been in the same class, hall would have been thirteen months older than Fernandez, and yet, I doubt anyone would have complained that Hall had a serious age advantage over Fernandez.
So he's a year older than his class. He's high school legal this year. And next year. And the following year. And once he put the hammer down today the race was over. Blown away. He came to the States at age 8 and he had to learn frackin' English so he's a year behind. Give him a break. I always thought Fernandez had the easiest, smoothest stride I'd ever seen in high school. It still looks more efficient than "the Luke," but Verzbicas is so relaxed, he lopes along. He's got tremendous aerobic capacity - probably from all those years of doing triathalon. His parents are both coaches, he eats and drinks and does everything right. We should blame him for doing everything right???
What difference does it make. There were older boys in the race. Why didn't they just beat him?

Yes, so he is 1 year old than even the older kids. I've named you examples of plenty of more kids who he will be almost two years older than by he is a senior. I guarantee you there are plenty more.
I just don't think people realize how many seniors turn 17 early in their senior year. My sister, a top runner, is another example of that (turned 17 nov her senior year, like German).
He will be nearly two years older than many seniors that came before him, and one year older than virtually all that came before him. I think it makes a difference.
It does NOT take away from his overall brilliance. I just think one should compare apples to apples and not talk nonsense of a "frosh records" or "1st soph to do this or that."

Not many at all. Most high school students will turn 18 within the nine months before or four months after their commencement ceremony.
I believe 1989 Champ Bryan Dameworth was 19 or within a few weeks of 19 when he won Footlocker(Kinney). I don't remember much discussion of that fact at the time. Of course, there weren't any internet forums to discuss such matters back then. In any event, he dominated (He ran 14:49). It certainly helped that he was more than a year older than almost every runner in the field.
It all depends on when he started school, he could have been 5 and halfway through the year turn 6.. he had to wait that extra time cause he was too young to start!! Thats what happened to my daughter!! She started kindergarten this year @ 5 and turned 6 in nov cause she was 2 young last year to start!!

Sir....I coach two sports at the high school level and I am well aware of the ages of all of the kids on the teams I am in charge of.
Trust me when I say....you haven't the slightest clue of what you are talking about.
There are occasional kids who are underaged for there classes. There are many more who are overaged...particularly in football and basketball. In most other sports a senior turns 18 during his or her senior year.Verzbicas is one year older than he "should" be.
That said....this would make him a junior agewise and his accomplishments are still pretty darn good for a junior.

Meh, It happens. I was one of the ones who graduated at 17. My senior year in XC, with a bad race, I finished 14th at State, and 19 of the top 20 runners were seniors. Every single one was older than me, and so was the Junior who finished two places behind me. Most of the Juniors on my own team were older than me.
