UC Berkley could cut track and cross country if anti-sports radicals up here get there way

Remember that Cal gets its $$ from the California taxpayers. If they don't like what the school is becoming, they will not support budgeting much to ensure its survival. And without football, Cal alums, the other major source of funds, prolly won't care much about supporting it anymore either.

You're out of your mind if you think the Pac-10 is the top athletic conference in the NCAA!! The SEC rules hands down. No questions, no arguments, period. Just look at the football results today. Or the conference track results from the last couple of years.

Alumni are needed to keep the most awesome football, track, field, cross country conference in the NCAA on top for more years. Come on alumni. Step up.

Cut university sports and go to the club system like the rest of the civilized world. If "their" health care system is good enough for us, then so is their sports system. It is asinine to blow money on sports when the state is going bankrupt.

One of biggest problems I had with being a university athlete was being part of this general sense of entitlement. Entitlement to be flown around the continent pursuing my little running hobby at the expense of the rest of the student body. Entitlement to the extent that many believed we were doing the rest of the student body a favor and should thus walk amongst them as a sort of athletic royalty.

There is nothing radical about not believing a small number of individuals should be glorified, deified, and supported financially to pursue their hobby at the expense of the uninterested student body.

I agree. There's $100 billion in farm subsidies wasted by Washington each year which is socialism. It's a rip off of U.S. taxpayers. The inefficient farms are best taken over by billion dollar corporate farms companies that spread the risk. Farm Socialism sucks and should be permanently outlawed.

Stanford wins the Sears Cup for the best athletic department and program in the NCAA every quarter/semester every year. What an achievement.

USC, Cal, UCLA are top 5 NCAA athletic programs. USC and UCLA are the clear #1 and #2 in Olympics, international medals, and pro sports athletes.

As good as Oregon and Washington Cross, Country and Track & Field are, they are overshadowed by the other sports and the rest of the PAC-10.

Those of us who live in PAC-10 states have been drilled with these facts since we were in grade school decades ago and surprisingly enough it's been true as long as I have been alive.

If you are an PAC-10 alum, or want to be an Alumni (you don't have to be a grad) then we need you. I made a donation today. How about it guys ? You know how much sports means to all of us. I know how much sports means to you too.

what school did you go to? at any school down here, sports are king. don't even joke about cutting them. i think the real problem is at cal, where the sports are not as big of a deal. my former school is in the black every year from its sports, and the track team even makes money. granted we may be one of the few track teams that does.

Wow. This is the most pathetic thread on the history of the messageboard. Never mind that most of the blatantly racist troll posts are still up (a few were deleted), nobody is actually discussing it in a reasonable manner. And it's on the front page. Weldon, you've got to do something to get your website under control, there are probably just a few individuals who are going around being ridiculous.

As for the initial post, here are my thoughts:

1. Nobody has discussed cutting track or XC, or in fact, any sport, as far as I know. Track and cross country weren't even mentioned in the initial post.

2. Cuts have been made to every department at the school. Professors are being forced to take vacation days "furloughs", which basically means pay cuts. Why should the athletic department be excluded from these departmental cuts? I think we all agree that athletics are secondary to education, but somehow it's the only thing that isn't being affected.

Get a grip - this is sport. These are academic institutions.

Whats the ratio of academic:athletic scholarship $?

This says quite a bit about the relative emphasis that these institutions place on both pursuits.

These places are SCHOOLS first and foremost. If you make a donation to Cal, for the love of god, give the money to the academic side.

I did, after the XC season of my 4th year.

Too much wasteful gov't spending, too much regulation, too much taxes. This is all bad for the American economy. We should cut Pentagon spending on the unprofitable deployments in the Middle East, lay off 50% of the Pentagon civil servants, and discharge 75% of the professional military. Spend the savings on NCAA sports which creates pro sports jobs and businesses. America's strength is it's innovation, creativity, and inventivenes, not big wasteful gov't spending.

Right which seems to be what they end up doing by throwing massive amounts of money down the black Hole that is sports at this school.

What a shame; UC-Berkeley track produced many Olympians; world and national record setters. And a Kansas U. freshman named Jim Ryun set the then mile world record at 3:51 on the cinder track at Edwards Stadium in '66. Poor Brutus Hamilton is rolling over in his grave.

One prof. said he doesen't even want football.."UC Berkeley is the best university in the world and athletics plays no part in that ranking," O'Hare said. "And every Sunday you can look in the newspaper and see how many football teams are better than ours, and at last count it was 22."

Yet U.C. Berserkley funds courses such as: "Arguing with Judge Judy: Popular ‘Logic'" and "Simpsons and Philosophy:" based on the book “The Simpsons and Philosophy: The D’oh of Homer.”
