Turn the leg inward, so that you are strengthening the inner sides of your quad. Point the toe as well. It's almost annoying how weird the exercise feels, due to lack of use throughout the years.

Oh, the same reason running on any unusual surface can cause problems. It messes up alignment and all that. Cambered roads can do that too.
Bosu Ball, Thera bands. Look up hip strengthening. 2 times 6 days a week in the gym. No running.
