To take this one step further, it would appear implausible that our President could win the NYC marathon. Most would agree this to be FACT (notice the representation in all-caps, this denotes the fact to be real and not of the made-up variety). If then follows that if our President can not win the NYC marathon, he can in FACT not be considered African. It goes to show how far this country has sunk, that this country is practically overrun by African nationals with unpronounceable names that can't win major marathons. This is why they run their anchor-races so quickly after arriving, so we can't deport them! And to think we have young Americans fighting overseas for our freedoms, and for what? Actually, Meb came here when he was 12. I love how Salazar is more American since he came when he 2. If you came here during your formative years you're culturally American. Any kid who spent all four years of HS here is an American. Its stupid we need qualifiers cause if you pass the citizenship process you're a citizen no matter what. Plus, the guy didn't even run til he got here and has been coached by all Americans.
Exactly what possible advantage does he have over "real blooded americans" that makes this less of a win? He learned how to run here at the same age most of us started running. Are they trying to argue he has some kind of genetic advantage because I'm pretty sure if his mom had given birth in the US he would have the exact same genetics but *shock* been a "full blooded american"?

Meb both united and divided running fans in America. It's a shame how great accomplishments can be turned into negative views. 1st, it's great to have the red, white, and blue on the podium. This is a very rare occurrence that fiew of us get to enjoy. However, the person in the uniform goes against what many American running fans want to see... The truth is that he is the perfect example of an American. He and his family are living & pursuing the American dream. Lets stop advertising it if we really don't want to see it happen...
I am never ceased to be amazed by how a great performance inspires such hate from SOME (not all of course) letsrun posters. In Canada, we're always proud of our athletes no matter where they were born. Donovan Bailey and Gary Reed were both born outside of Canada but no one ever questions their "Canadianess". There will always be trolls on letsrun, I understand that, but let us try to avoid feeding them as someone mentioned earlier and celebrate a wonderful performance by Meb. I went to school in the States and am about as Canadian as anyone could be, but you can bet I was cheering pretty loud for Meb to pull it off. Its the performance that matters, and I am pretty sure that Meb was happy to do it with a USA on his chest as a thank you for the country that gave him opportunities he otherwise might not have had in Eritrea.
