This is a sporting event. Part of any sporting event is to know and follow the rules. It's an inherent part of *all* sports.
It's not necessary for the rules of any sporting event to "make sense". If you enter an event you agree to follow them.
Lots of people did the same including some of the men who ran Boston Qualifying times. They should have DQed a few hundred people the rules apply to everyone not just the winners.

It is, however, necessarily for them to be UNIFORMLY ENFORCED. When this is not the case the rule is useless and unfair. Selective enforcement deserves all the criticism its getting here.

And the officials are responsible for enforcing them uniformly. How many thousands of other runners did this. Are we to believe the officials didn't see it?
I think it's pretty pitiful she got DQ'ed. Seems like the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon taking themselves a little too seriously here.

- I assume this guy was DQ'ed since he's clearly getting aid and impeding other runners.

- A few years ago, I ran a couple marathons in the low-2:30s and was top-5. Both times, I got fluids from my parents on one occasion later in the race. I also volunteered to share that bottle with the guys who were with me. I guess I should have been DQ'ed. Should they have also?
I understand the intent of the rule, but like rules that exist in other sports - officials can use their judgement to determine when (not) to enforce them. I think Serena Williams might agree with this.

Obviously someone did use their judgment and determined to enforce them for a race winner where prize money was involved and not in your case. Some people would call that common sense. Others wouldn't.

The rules were clearly stated and although it doesn't say, I'll assume it was a USATF certified official that made the call. Here's how it works: you typically only have USATF officials @ championship or prize money races sanctioned by USATF. They usually watch the lead runners from a vehicle. There usually aren't enough officials and/or vehicles to cover more than the lead runners. Thus, no, you can't have 'even' enforcement covering all runners. And, you can't rely on fellow runners to report infractions. Like it or not, uneven enforcement exists in this matter.
Some might say; if it can't be enforced across the board, it shouldn't be a rule. Okay, if there's no rule then aid can be offered to everbody anywhere by anybody. The potential for some to receive more aid than others is not a satisfactory situation. Level the field by stating aid is available at designated spots.
If somebody has a better way of dealing w/how and where to dispense on-course aid, speak up.

He was not DQ-ed. He should have shot prior to crossing the finish line along w/ the rest of the happy family. All families joining athletes on the field of play should also be handled in a similiar manner. This punishment can be applied retroactivley to Mark McGuire's son as well.

Most races do take place without USATF sanctioning and insurance.

This is true by a staggering degree; perhaps 99-1. This means 99% of events can operate in nearly (their insurance may frown on some things like free beer, etc) any manner. This sets up a dilemma of sorts; what if somebody sets a record on a certified course but the event wasn't USATF sanctioned. What if aid was allowed at any point to the record setter and he in fact did take aid at 5 unofficial locations on a 15 km course, should his record be allowed?
This rule was made by a committee whose members jog around the gym for 400m once a week and spend the rest of their time pontificating. Its a shame.
