OH! Paaaleezzz! I'm so sick of Joe Bag O'Donuts walking around town with his finishers medal hanging around his neck. Cant we get these people arrested for something? I guess if you are in high school, its OK but if you are supposed to be an adult, it should be a felony.

Being 14 years old, that seemed incredibly cool to me. The clinking of the medals on a heavily adorned sweater conferred quite a bit of status in the high school culture.
There were other avenues for status, as well. For example, if a girl could tease her hair so that it rose a foot or two above her head, that also was a status maker in certain circles.
It was the tradition in my school also to wear them on your letterman jacket. The guys that wrestled and were good runners could really get a good collection on their jackets. I always thought that was cool. It was also good advertisement for the running programs in our school also. From what I remember, wrestling, XC and TF were about the only sports that gave medals. So if you walked around looking like a South American General, you were considered a badass.

30 minutes out of respect for the event, then put it away. Unless there is a chance of it getting you laid then wear it any place any time...
Guys, guys, don't let this get to you. There are more important things in life to worry about - like almost everything except medals.
I don't think it's bad to wear it right after the race for a picture or something, but after that I would consider it arrogant

Granted the first part of the post mentioned commemorative medals, but I can see how posts containing more than one line can be confusing.

I don't wear medals I've won (because that was a while ago), but I do have a trophy room. Medals, ribbons and plaques adorn the walls, and then my trophies are all on a moving conveyor belt that moves through the room and in and out of the room via holes in the wall. Music is played and cycles through the Theme From Rocky, Blue Collar Man, and Eminence Front while a disco ball floods the room with mirrored reflection of light. There's a panel on the wall where you can select a specific trophy, and when it enters the room, a spotlight follows it until it leaves the room. The Lovely Mrs. Flagpole thinks I've gone over the top here, but I disagree.
Are you kidding me? I'm still wearing my ribbons from the 7th grade science fair.
I'm going to buried with all of my shiny plastic trophies. Just like the mighty pharaohs Egypt.

After San Diego and Denver marathons last year I saw people 2 days later wearing their medals around town. Both times I asked them if they ran the race, which they did. I then asked them why are they wearing their medals 2 days later. Both said that they were proud of their accomplishments. Not wanting to crap on anyone, as finishing a marathon is huge no matter how long it takes you, I said that it was cool that they were proud, then asked if it would be cool for me to wear my 20+ marathon finisher medals around my neck and go walking all over town. Neither answered.
Your comparison is not valid. The runners you mentioned had just finished their races (1 or 2 days prior) while your marathons happened a long time ago, I assume.Also, sorry to break it to you, but your remark wasn't funny or witty at all.

You are correct as I did not provide adequate information. I was in town for both of those races as I ran them as well and was not wearing a medal, t-shirt, or other merchandise from those races. Sorry that I did not lay it out more clearly for you.
And FYI, I have finished most of those (13) in the last 3 years.
