What are some D1 schools that are higher mileage/known for developing runners?

Seattle University has a good program going now, and works on developing their runners in a consistent, progressive manner. Their goal is definitely long-term improvement.

Lower mileage benefitted all of them.

To the person who mentioned seattle u, I am interested in the mens program there. I am currently a freshman at a d1 university, but I've heard good things about seattle. How is the mens team, is there a standard that needs to be met, and also is the team generally accepting of walkons, for instance if i came in as a transfer

Since someone else mentioned Willamette, I figure I might as well mention Whitman. It's generally considered to be a better school than Willamette (although that doesn't mean that every department is better, or that it's a better fit for everyone), is also in the Northwest, and has had a pretty solid women's team for the last few years.

Western Washington U is a great academic school with a growing xc/track program starting to make their presence on the National scene on a consistent basis. The program really allows flexibility and specialization for each athlete's training.... and the Bellingham trails make it very easy to get in high mileage.

Yeah, Ritz Culpepper and Goucher are total burnouts. Too bad they never made anything of themselves. Not like those studs Trujillo and Werhane.

Well to be honest, no. It might happen, but you probably wouldn't like being one of the last runners on the team anyways.

Here's a bit of advice nobody's really offered yet: look for a school where you'd really be happy, running or not. You sound smart; don't sacrifice an education to go to a "running school." You can really succeed just about anywhere as long as you are comfortable there. First look at the general characteristics of the school you want to go to (size, fields of study, location, academic standards), THEN start talking to coaches. I'm paraphrasing wejo here, but you can really only run for 2 or 3 hours a day. You should aim to enjoy the other 22 hours in the day too. You'll find that many schools, though not known for high mileage, will have thoughtful and intelligent coaches willing to work with you to make the most of your ability and work ethic. If mileage works for you, they'll let you do it. In fact, you probably DON'T want to go to a "high mileage school"--what if they hammer their easy days? What if they run too much mileage for you? (or not enough)? It's better to go to a good college with a knowledgeable, flexible coach than a second-rate school that has cranked out a lot of all-Americans.

They are open to walk-ons of any calibur, are a top-10 program and only getting better, and all their athletes run between 80-140 mpw. Coach Conner will literally let ANYONE on the team as long as they show up to practice and do the work. But it would help to be a sub-19 5k guy at least.

If money is not too high on your priorities, then you should definitely take a look at Gonzaga. Pat Tyson is in his second year there and the woman's team is really improving. He is willing to give most decent runners a chance to walk on to the team if they are willing to commit themselves. I obviously can't quote exact mileage totals, but I would assume under Tyson that it would be near 70-80 MPW.

Plus the Spokane area has a ton of great places to run and a community that is incredibly supportive.

OP is a chick, but yeah, this still stands.

If you are willing to come further east, I think West Virginia University might be a good fit for you. Though some there do very high mileage, Coach Cleary focuses on individualizing everyone's training to what works best for each athlete. They currently are one of the elite women's distance programs in the nation with mostly girls who ran similar PR's to you in HS. It is a well known fact here in Colorado the CU is a high mileage burnout school. Even if you talk to the successful CU runners, they all dislike Wetmore for the fact that he pushes too hard. Only the strong survive at that school.

Dathan won a national championship on high mileage then went on to train for the marathon(ie high mileage) and that training just got him the American record and 6th place in the world. Explain how low mileage has helped him? I would also point out that Culpepper and Goucher both have more national titles between the both of them than you competed in races. The girl likes high mileage that's why she asked and Colorado is the the quintessential example of a high mileage school. Also she asked for D1 suggestions and you gave her 3 D2 schools and a D3 school.
