Paul McMullen the biggest 4 minute Miler ??

Steve Gerhart (Div. II UCDavis - early 80s) ran 3:42.67. He's at least 6'4" and his racing weight was just over 200 pounds. I used to run behind him in intervals with his elbow in my face. He was 2nd in Div. II nat's as a soph, was fastest going into final and tripped as a junior, and won Div. II nat's as a senior.

there was a kid that went to providence that was 6ft 4 and close to 200 lbs,think he ran 3.38 or 39....big guy,saw im win big east before.not sure of his name

I'm currently 5'5' 180lb.....I cannot break 4...but maybe 5!..:)

Henry was as big as he was tough. Looks like we're talking 2 different things in this thread. Tall and Big.

Big is height to weight, tall is tall. Henry was big, and I know he ran sub 4 even heavier than 180. Don't forget Henry placed 5th in NCAA XC in 1990, which is more impressive than his Mile.

Where do you rank a guy who ran 3:41.07 and weighed 160 lbs at 5' 10"?

Height is not really important. Weight is what sets people apart. Someone who weighs 180 - 200 pounds is taking a lot more force/beating than someone who weighs 160, regardless of height.

Height is a factor on short indoor tracks or tracks with really tight turns.

160 pounds is not huge for a miler and I would consider that a good mark for someone of that build - nothing crazy though.

i know hesch supposedly was in the 190's when he made usa's with a 3;40 but i don't think he ever actually broke four, could be mistaken though

Wasn't there a miler in the 70's, Jack Fath from Fordam, who was well over 200lbs and ran a sub 4???

I am 5'11" and 185. I have run 4:58 recently. I also bench 270.

Yo, Youngblood, I said nothing about Paul the runner. Try another defense. I know him - personally. What I've seen is a great big 'hey, look at me, look at me' guy. That appeals to some who are probably more wowed by what he's done than by who he is.

You might be interested to know Mr Big is going down to the Meyo meet to watch the mile today.

I think I remember Aussie Steve Foley as being well over 6' but I amy be wrong. anyone know if he revived his career after being a top junior in the world in the late 70's early 80's?

Jack Fath of Fordham University; 3:59.5 in 1968 at about 6'4 and maybe 200 pds. and i think it was cinder track.

Eric Henry video of NCAA indoor sub-four mile. Most came to shoulders or neck on Henry. A few appeared to be endanger of eating his elbows. The announcers guess at his height and weight and refer to him as a 'big guy'

I met him once in his heavier days, and thought "no way this dude was a sub-4 miler" before looking him up.
