rudisha's just starting to make his mark. I'd be surprised if this is as good as it gets. We all thought last year that Kaki was the one to move the 800m forward and maybe he still will, and Rudisha was just a very good prospect, but since then Kaki's been inconsistent and Rudisha is suddenly number four all time performer, and still apparently very young.

I think it's almost as likely that he'll never run as fast again. Borzakovskiy set his PR at 20 (yeah I know his racing style isn't really ideal for setting PRs). Cruz set his PR at 21.

Borzakovskiy runs even splits therefore his racing style is ideal for setting PRs

Watching the race vid, it is clear that there is a strong wind on the back straight, but it is a tailing wind, while it appears that the front straight is protected by trees and buildings. If this is the case, then the runners benefit from a stronger tailwind canceling out the head winds. If this is typical of this track, then the track might potentially be FASTER under windy conditions (I've seen this on at least one accasion, but unfortunately, more cases are the opposite, i.e. Hayward typically has a strong headwind on the back straight while the front stretch is blocked by the Bowerman building :(

Yeah, you're right about Borzkovskiy, he had sub 1:42 potential, but he wasted it. Cruz was battling injuries on and off, but was still able to come back for a silver in '88. We'll see with Rudisha.

The athletes themselves over the years have said that the Rieti "facilities" are fast.

As far as Rudisha's 'age', who knows? A few guys here say he look 'young' but he looked 20 years old two years ago when he was African junior champ. So he might really be 20, he might not. I just watched the vid on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Gx_ADUiOlY ) and if you stop the vid at 4:08, Rudisha looks 25, just as he looked 25 at the World's where he simply had an off day. It's best to ignore the given ages for these guys for the most part. Just admire the talent.

Well for years there were a lot of rumours about the legitimacy of the tracks markings - the start and finish lines were in different locations... IN LANE ONE! There are quite a few old school athlete agents/managers that used to have a good laugh about Rieti...

HOWEVER, the track was re-laid about 2-3 years ago so I would seriously doubt there are any "inconsistencies" these days.

Rieti is just a fast track with a meeting that doesn't have that much money and therefore not that much pressure. It's always at the end of the year (ie after most of the big meets and/or WC/Olympics when guys are a bit more relaxed, they are naturally in really good shape and because they have been only racing/relaxing and staying sharp for the last month

Rieti must be short - isn't it where coe ran his sub 3.30 when past his best

I wonder. Ovett set his WR there and commented afterwards he was confident that he hadn't run so fast.

Someone (Ventolin?) said they rebuilt the track a few years ago.

Unless the backstraight was, say +5m/s.It would be cool to have wind readings for back/front straight for distance events in all big meetings, in order to more finely judge performances.
