Thats the best part of a man's 40s - the growing realization you can be trusted w/ large tasks, and people actually will trust you.
I know a guy who is 39 and is trying to become a firefighter. He could pass for a late twenty year old. His face doesn't have very many lines on it at all. He is a unique case though. If you all want a young looking face when you're older, don't squint a lot (buy sunglasses and reading glasses), don't frown a lot, and don't raise your eyebrows when you speak.
When I was young, I noticed that once my parents got to 55 you could see them getting older in the face every year. 40 is still pretty young. Do yourself a favor and go exploring while you're young so you can have stories to tell for many years. Saving all your life experiences for retirement is sort of a waste.
I suppose you could always die young.....
I'm in my early forties and by far it's the greatest. I'm in the best shape of my life, been told I look about ten years younger and feel like it too.
Don't hate on us because we age gracefully.

I'm 38, so I'm in the middle here. I look like I'm still in my late twenties. I can pick up chicks in their twenties, and they don't know how old I really am. But I don't like them anymore. Their reference points are different from mine. They've never seen Pulp Fiction or listened to Pearl Jam. So, I date in my age range.
I am way smarter now than I was in my twenties. I know better now. I realize that highly successful people are where they are mostly because of luck. Moderately successful people are where they are because of work. Losers are where they are because of laziness and bad habits.
I never married, and I thought I would regret it until all my friends started to get divorced.
Most things people ascribe to old age is really a product of being out of shape. I've met a lot of fit 50-year-olds, and they do quite well.
I think winning your age group is a great achievement, and something we all should aspire to. I can't relate to people who ran at a high level when they were young only to give it up when they "retired." I see running as a lifelong thing like Bill Rodgers does.
The other thing about getting older is that I am way cooler now. I am secure in who I am, and I have learned the value of self-deprecation. Younger people seem all hung up on what other people think about them, and I could give a damn what other people think about me. I see younger people as massively insecure, and I laugh at them. I would never want to go back to that, so getting older has its benefits. Plus, it is really cool when you bang some 21-year-old's girlfriend.
There is a key difference between me and guys my age. I consciously made the decision to not go the family route, and I am glad I did. To a man, they all envy me. Most middle aged bitterness comes from men slaving to support ungrateful children and a b*tchy wife. Everyone of them tells me to stay single, and I do. Plus, I can't stand any of their kids. Bunch of brats.
My advice to the younger guys is pretty simple. Learn to like yourself and not worry about what others think. Never get married. Keep running. So far, so good.

In my forties, and the biggest thing is that I can't do some things that used to be able too. I need a little more recovery time, and I don't go quite as hard as I used too.
The big thing for me is always wondering if I/my family will be ok when I retire (which isn't for a long time).
One thing I don't miss is going out all the time like I did when I was young. I enjoy relaxing at my home, and being with the kids.

That was a good post and I can't believe so many old timers took the bait. Some of the responses of either anger (40yr. old karate kid) or trying to justify themselves to some kid who is projecting some anger that he has toward his parents made me laugh.
The truth is you are probably happier in your 40's and 50's than in your 20's or teenage years. I actually feel bad for many young kids today trying to find their niche in very tough financial times. I know in your 50's you just have a lot more free time than you had when you had young kids.
As far as quality of life, and this will be a huge shock to many, its the same whether you run a 15 minute 5k or a 25 minute 5k!

There is a lot of BS in this post. Nothing wrong with being a life-long single guy. If you're happy more power to you. But please don't make it sound like every married father is miserable, because they're not. The happy ones just aren't hanging out with you because they're happy to be with their family. The fact that you need to claim that all married men are miserable is a way to rationalize your choices.
Raising kids is a tough business. God I know it. There are times when life would seem so much simpler and funner without a family. But the fact is that every time my work takes me away from them, I miss them and my wife a lot. I look around and see 30 somethings and 40 somethings hanging out in bars trying to "pick up chicks" and quite frankly they look a little pathetic and don't seem all that happy to me.

Actually, most of the authoritative studies on this have come to the opposite conclusion. You have no empirical data to support your claim.
You come to your conclusion by listening to unhappy married men who hang out with single 40 year olds and complain about women. Why would you think 40 year old men who have never gotten a quality woman to love them are happier? It's funny how men like this always seem to refer to women as "bitches" who are all psychos, yet these same men treat most women as an object of conquest.
Of course there are married men in bad marriages who are unhappy. They should get out if need be. But please don't advise young men that marriage is an inherently unhappy institution. You're hardly qualified to do so.
I'm 20 now and don't think I'd be happy in the shoes of a 40 year old. When I'm 40 I'll probably feel the same way about people in their 20's. Nothing wrong with that, things change.
The 40 year old guys talking about their young girlfriends and sweet single lifestyle always come off as kind of pathetic and probably secretly bitter.
Forty's the new 20! Less than a year from being 40 and I'm still sticking it into 20 year olds asses. I LOVE IT!!!
Well....people on both sides of this discussion are correct in some measure.
It's probably hard to convince someone who's 20 of this, and I would never in "real life" waste time trying, but 40 really doesn't have to be that old, physically. You don't have to be decrepit. I managed to hold on quite well until 47 or 48. Others maybe last longer.
On the other hand, trying to prove how cool or young you are at age 40 by dating a 20 year-old IS repulsive and pathetic, and it's not a valid way to determine your own worth.

Wait until you get well into your 50's..like less than 2 years from retirement and one day you find out your wife has a category 4 glioblastoma and before you can even get over the shock your on your way to M.D. Anderson to try and save her life.
