Its more efficient (if not the most efficient) because unlike unnatural techniques such a s pose etc, it utilises "free energy"
A basic understanding of physics shows a landing on midfoot and using contact energy (as foot rolls forward) to propel lower leg back up via strong tendons/muscles. Knee doesn't actually lift high (less verticle motion of heavier upper leg) and trailing leg becomes a pendulum, which then starts the process again, landing deceptively just forward of COM (centre of mass) to generate the same thing.
These guys (and most of elite marathoners) run this way...please don't sell them any of that "how can we improve our running style stuff" that westerners seem to think is the answer.
Tadesse has the lowest recorded (measured) running economy ever tested and Bekele would be better or equal i.e. at 50ml O2/kg/km at 3min pace...in other words, at 3min pace he is only running at about 65% of VO2max...if Bekele has a (reported) VO2max of 80+ then if the same economy he would be going at 62% for 3min/km.
Can't wait to see him in the marathon...because that's where this running style and economy is most beneficial
