This is a perfect chance for Eric Peterson to leave UCLA and come to a Cal Poly program that has the potential. If Peterson is smart he will go after this job hard. His UCLA clock seems to have hit midnight and that gig in Westwood might be over.

If she were a man and behaved the same, would it still be an issue?
Terry is a man silly.
Good one!
She does seem to be a good choice to help USATF revamp the coaches education program. Though many were stumping for Boo to be chosen.
And Jack Hoyt had just interviewed for the Boise State Head job. Is something crazy going on at Cal-Poly?
Venegas makes more sense for this position. They already have a successful distance coach with Conover. With Venegas' throws program and Conover's distance program, Cal Poly could easily become a regional power and possibly a top 5-10 NCAA team.
Hate to say this -- but Terry has always been Brooks Johnson's girl. Will she be his puppet? Will we see the same Brooks Johnson ideas being pushed by Terry as gospel?

because plenty of people have felt burned by crawford over the years. she's always put herself way ahead of the athletes, treated them like they didn't matter, and also treated her subordinate coaches like crap. it's truly love of coaching that conover is still there. so much success has occurred DESPITE crawford, it's not even funny.
i hope this explains all the "vitriol", or, crappy feelings about crappy treatment.
Very true.
She did a "bait and switch" tactic with scholarship money on one of my athletes out of high school. Not trustworthy at all!
Just my opinion but everytime I have meet her I've felt the need to take a bath. She will do well at USATF and the filth within it. And she is who has been chosen to educate our coaches?
I find it interesting that anything Terry Crawford has done has at least been out in the open. I personally have had nothing but great experiences with her and she has been very supportive of athletes. I did not run for her at any of the colleges she coached at, but my son very strongly considered going to Cal Poly SLO. She has been encouraging to him even though he chose another school. But the disturbing thing to me is that all these accusations are made anonymously while hiding behind fake names and only providing one side of the story. I'm sure Terry, like all of us, is not perfect, but I'd like to see her accusers try to handle being head coach at a D1 college for 18 years and see if everyone you come in contact with is pleased with everything you do.

If Peterson ended up at Poly (which I highly doubt) I would stop contributing money to the program. I think most of the alumni would.
After the Brooks and Terry show, we were ecstatic that Conover was named head cross country coach, eventhough Crawford was still the "Director of Track and Field". If Poly wants the program to move to the next level and increase alumni support, putting Conover in her position makes the most sense.
Peterson killed UCLA like Brooks and Terry killed Cal Poly in the 90's. None of us want to go back to the 90's.
Ruth,
I didn't run at Cal Poly, but I know and have talked to many runners who have. There is not one of these runners who has any respect for Terry Crawford, some of them use the word hate. As the above writer said, these alumni runners have nothing to do with the program because of Terry even though to a person they love Conover. They would love to contribute to the program and I believe you will see much more of it now.
Specifically, many times she has taken scholarship money away after promising the money would be there. Also, she has lied and reneged on promises to the local high school running community. Notice how the Cal Poly Invite high school running meet is so weakly attended.
Ruth, I respected you as an athlete but you are off the mark here. You do not know Terry the way some of us do. She only has use for people that can help her or she feels can help her position. As a former elite athlete you can help her just by who you are. On the other hand she is known to be deceitful to those that she deems not worthy of her time. But like others, that's just my opinion and experience. At least you have my name.
I really appreciate the last couple of comments. I admit that my only association with Terry is as an elite athlete and not as a college recruit. Therefore, perhaps the USATF position is a good move. I'm also not saying that she's perfect and has never done anything wrong. My issue is the anonymous accusations and nasty negativity. I'm sure she's also done a lot of good or she probably wouldn't have made it for 18 years at SLO. If someone has a complaint, don't just throw it out there without some facts and specifics. Or, at least have the guts to identify yourself. I'm not afraid of the truth. Also, if someone doesn't want it publicly posted (I know there's opinions of my own that I don't want to see online), you can send me an e-mail and I will keep it confidential. If I need to be set straight, I can handle it. We're all entitled to our opinions.
All I have to say is that you cannot attribute any of the Men's Cross Country team's success to Terry, as far as coaching goes Conover is the only one responsible.
sounds dicey
oh, it's already gotten dicey...a long time ago...
did any of you read the article?! she coached stephanie brown-trafton, sharon day and ben bruce!
don't forget, she also led the men's cross country team to its big west titles!

Ha ha ha... Crawford personally coaches discus, high jump and mens steeple? Not so much.
Head coaches get the credit (or blame) for the entire program. Crawford gets the credit for hiring coaches who coached these events/athletes.
Crawford did coach Maggie Vessey in college.
I wish terry the best. I wont comment on her past performance and I have firsthand knowledge of it. Thats now in the past. Time to look to the future. Given the time frame, the budget and his experience, Mark is the man for the job. Theres plenty of qualified assistants out there if he needs them.
