Ben True wins Maine division of B2B in 29:10

Ben True does have amazing ability, but that is about it, he has not done that much for all commentary.

But he has run :

1:50 scratch

3:40

and if he ever got enough real land mileage under him could be a very good 5K runner it would appear, but it seems, he simply is not that serious about it, as his skiing always took priority and that is fine, but time is passing by quickly now.

Certainly one of the best distance runners of all-time at Dartmouth ... school record holder at 1500, mile and the distance medley...His 3:57.7 anchor leg of the record setting distance medley was a highlight of the Penn Relays ... first athlete in Dartmouth’s long history to break 4:00 for the mile ... has earned All-American honors in cross-country, outdoor track and field, and cross-country skiing ... has won two Heps XC titles and will attempt to be only the 4th runner in league history to claim a 3rd title this fall ... spent several months last year off campus from Dartmouth training at altitude in Idaho ... will run cross-country for the Green this fall, ski for Dartmouth in the winter, and graduate in March of 2009 ... plans a post-collegiate career as a distance runner.

ya... he didn't do anything in college to merit any attention... idiots.

This guy is a national class caliber runner with the potential to be an international class runner. It appears that you were so intent on throwing my post in the basket with the rest of the negative posts that you foolishly overlooked my inherit compliment of Ben. You are still the fool. This is an international caliber race. If this is not 1st tier then what is?

To be fair to Ben the women's record on the roads is 30:21. Plus, He was a miler in college so stepping up quite a bit in distance and running what he did was impressive.

Why does everyone on here have to act like they know everything about the runners and programs that are praised at the beginnings of the posts and try to degrade them to nothing... Honestly even the finest running coach would have nothing better than a shot in the dark as to what any runner could do without coaching them. It's so relative it's impossible. All you know about Ben True is what you've seen through media and it doesn't matter if I'm wrong and you've actually seen him race or know him and his family to some degree, without being a coach of his, God, or Ben True himself, you have know idea what he's ultimately capable of doing. So to all Letsrun posters, if you have nothing to say that is encouraging to fellow posters/runners or actually pertinent to the conversation, try to resist the urge to be an asshole.

I guess you're sipping on the crazy juice as well and wanna get e-slapped. B2B is NOT 1st tier. Oly trials, WC trials, Boston, Chicago, NYC, USA Champs road races, etc, etc, etc are all 1st tier...all places where Ben Truly belong.

Hmmmm, well hes not a marathoner so that eiminates Boston and NYC, hes been to USA National Championships so hes been to "WC Trials" and B2B IS a world class road race that is won in the 27's almost every year.

Oly trials: not contested this year

WC trials: he competed

Boston, Chicago, NYC: he's a miler, you seriously think that's part of the miler circuit? what other milers competed at those races?

USA Champs road races: he was in college until 2 months ago and since then there was the mile (less comp than B2B), the 25k, clearly longer than True's specialty and 10k (this is the one race I can see that would make sense, except it's in Atlanta and the comp is basically equal to B2B).

Like it or not, Beach to Beacon is considered part of the top flight road race circuit in the US. With a course record of 27:28 (the fastest road 10k in the world that year), it's pretty tough to argue.

This is a little misleading. I'm not trying to degrade Ben as I think this is a very solid performance. However, I've beaten a 27:20 guy on the roads, and while it's not my primary event I've never broken 29:00. Now, this does not mean I think I can run 27:15 if I tried, I don't, and I'm sure Ben doesn't think he's now a 12:55 or 2:06 guy. Probably the best comparison is Kiptoo in there, what did he run this year, 28:30? That's about right for this quality of performance.

Why is this misleading? Out of season for Richard and Felix? Not their main event? The whole point was it is also not the main event or 'in season' for Ben or Shadrack for that matter. I agree...lets call it for what it is...a 29:10 on the roads for a 10K...out of main racing season for a guy who doesn't run the 10K normally. It is a solid time. I don't think people are predicting he is the second coming of Prefontaine/Shorter/Ryun (can we already add Hall to that list?) but it is a big jump in both fitness and shows good range for someone who didn't really focus on longer stuff in college. Why is that so hard for people to admit? How often do you see performances of 29:10 on the roads (or even in a track 10K)? How many times do any of the runners out here even do training at paces that are equivalent (and I mean for 200s, 400s, or higher). This is not a slow time and should be noted. What other topics should be talk about on a running message board? Who Jordan Hasay is dating? Is Andrew Lemoncello anorexic (he is not)? These are certainly more appropriate running related topics. Ha ha.

The internet is a great thing making performances all over known to people at an instant...but it has also skewed things in that we think certain times for races are just common place. They are not. People this past spring were calling sub 9 3200 races by HSers average or not that impressive. How many states had sub 9's last year and how many state meets were won in times over 9? People need to wake up a bit more.

I wasn't trying to be misleading.Bboss was commenting on how B.True was going to turn Oregon Elite to sub-elite.I was just mentioning that he took a lot of fairly good scalps the other day(definetely not a sub-elite performance by any standards).
