The average closing 400m in an elite, international race is sub 54. They will need to be on 13:05 pace and close in 54 to be competitive (running 12:55 or so). It seems that Jager may be a year or two away from such a race. Great race for him. An even better race for German - his 3:38 1500m speed will be a great benefit to him when his aerobic system can handle a faster pace. I suspect he will break 13:00 within the next 24 months - at the age of 20-21.

It was he American record until Pre ran 12:51.4 in 1974. Pre was twenty-three at the time.

Yeah, most of us want to be nice, as much as we can, but Robert you coach D1 and that is BY DEFINITION 18-23 yr olds mostly. How can you not know how to get that information?
BTW, Ritz ran 13:27 as a 19 yr old and (I think) 13:29 the next yr (after injury). The 13:27 is the fastest any AmColl has run during the school year as a freshman.
GF is the fastest HS 2-miler EVER and a 4:01 miler as a HS'er ... It would not be a surprise for him to set records of all kinds from 1500-10k at every step along the way.

This is on the IAAF Website for qualification. I dont see anything about finishing top 4, unless that is just a USATF rule.
