That 27:40 for Salazar woudl have been at the '81 World Cup. 3rd behind M. Kedir and Schildhauer. But he was out of college by then. His fastest 10k in college would have been a 27:49.X in London about 10 weeks before his first NY Marathon win in 2:09:41.
I thought Michael Aish went 27:48, but i looked it up and he went 28:00.96 in 2002. Also 13:22 that year. He must have run sub-28 after college.

I've always heard great things about that race. Is it true he just kept running 67 after 67 after 67? I was always a big Jim Hill fan from the beginning. Wasn't he from Vienna, Virginia originally? Great HS and college career. I don't know if injuries or SportHill was the reason for his not pursuing it longer. But fantastic runner and from all accounts, one of the truly great races ever run at Hayward. Do you have any additional eye witness accounts from that race? I never saw it but everyone I have heard speak of it has does so with reverence.
Butler was finished with Montana State when he dipped under 28:00. I believe Chelimo broke the WR in the same race 2707. AND, I think Butler was sick when he ran 2759. But yes, it was after his senior season. I think he was second behind Falcon at the Prefontaine 2mile. I think.
In regards to Sos, i think his friends called his Sos but his full name was/is Sosthenes. I have always loved that name too along with Gidamis Shahanga. Great call on both of those names. Both Gidamis and Zack were Tanzanian while Sosthenes was from a little country in east Africa that didn't produce much talent called Kenya.

They use to do these "invite" races in Eugene after the dual meets while the stands were still full of people. I believe it was this type of set-up where Salazar and Rono had their famous dual (27:30) a year earlier. Maybe some of my comrades will help out with more details.
With regards to Hill's race, I can't remember many other names that were in it, I think Adrian Royal, some AW guys and anyone else who thought they could run 28:30 or so who was in town that day.
I remember the splits were pretty even, the weather was awful, and he ran about 22 laps by himself.

so anything run after NCAA's in your senior year of eligibility, even if it is weeks after Nationals in the same season is considered post collegiate? which seems to be the case with Shannon Butler.... if my memory serves me right at US Nationals 1991 Shannon was still running in a MSU singlet.....
Me. I ran under 28 in 1989 at UTSA Cross Country Invite. Didn\'t realize I had 2k more to go, but I ran under 28:00.

I think I saw this race, but it would have been 83 (my first year at UO) and I think it was just after Hill graduated -- which would explain why it's not listed on Oregon's all-time list for 10,000.
Virgin's 27;59 at the '76 Olympic Trials was out of season, ie after completion of the college year.

My memory is not as good as it use to be, but I could swear he was wearing a U of O singlet in that race. Besides I don't think he ever competed after college for a club.
My memory of that 10,000 with Hill isn't clear either (I could just be remembering some other race he led the whole way and won during the 83 season), but the 27:55 time is definitely not listed on the UO all-time list.
It should be its own thread...and maybe we shouldn't have brought it up in this thread. I don't think either of us were thinking that it was a Duck collegiate sub 28....we were just admiring that particular piece of running.

Hill running sub 28:00 is pertinent to the discussion, since i'm sure he did it as a collegiate.
