EG,
Who are you? Did you ever run in the Army 10 miler?
Naw, never made it to the Army Ten. Some of the total scores being reported here are killer; I was 25 when I took the test and had some of the 17- to 21-year-old folks here been able to avail themselves of the same scoring tables I did (the Army assumes a much greater physical decline with age than would occur in anyone even remotely interested in conditioning) they would have blown 400 out of the water.
GaryB, I'm glad to know that 10:14 at Fort Sam (the only track "race" I have been in with a "field" of over 150!) was really more like a 10:02 - I wasn't in the greatest shape at the time and the heat in Texas about killed me. The funny thing was doing the diagnostic test at the beginning of camp in 11:03 or so (just fast enough to "win") and watching everyone else fawn over this time, and then - after my "huge improvement" to an "amazing" 10:14 -listening to these same others express disbelief when I told them (matter-of-factly and only after much grilling) that I'd run the 3K equivalent of about a minute faster.
