Hey Sarcasm! I believe both Flanagan and Willis got the most out of there potential at the Olympic games.
Willis took that confidence and using it now being quite dissapointed when he loses to the likes of Lagat and has looked incredible indoors.
Flanagan is a superb runner with great form and her effort at the Olympics was commendable. Rupp performed well at the Olympics as well but you didn't see Willis celebrating his personal indoor mile time losing to Lagat did you?

Its probably because he's not good enough to do it, yet. He running very fast right now. Maybe in another year or two he'll be winning them when he gets fast enough.

Try this numbnuts. Let's say Willis races in New Zealand, breaks at 25 year old record by Rod Dixon or John Walker and nearly wins the race against Lagat. The New Zealand press ask him to stand next to his record for a photo. You think he says "no thanks"?
That would be disrespectful to the former record holder and the people of New Zealand by basically saying, sorry your records don't mean sh#t.
To put it more into perspective, it would have to be in a situation where Lagat is in his prime as a 3:48 (or better) indoor miler and Willis has an all time PR of 3:54. The race unfolds to 3:50.10 for Lagat and 3:50.19 for Willis. Now you have something in the same from of reference as Rupp's race against Daba.

It's not like Rupp announced his retirement after the race. Setting a national record, particularly one that has been around for 27 years, is a pretty significant milestone. Surely you don't think his progression as a runner is done because he's pretty happy about hitting that mark.

So when a guy (such as Legat) comes to the US from another country, trains here for years, and then decides to compete for the US, letsrunners call him out as not being a true American. Now when a guy comes and trains here and continues to compete for his home country, we're supposed to be pissed about that as well? So basically, from the second a good runner shows up in the US, there is no course of action that they can take that will please letsrun.

Probably because Willis didn't set any national or personal records at the Garden against Lagat. But I can assure you, if he had broken John Walker's indoor national record in that race, he would have been jumping up and down.

In losing, we saw Rupp's best effort. You can never say that about the winner of a race. For all we know, Daba could be in sub 13 shape and was running just fast enough to win. For the OP to denigrate a runner who just "sed" an American record says more about him than the subject of his post.

He almost won. He may have lost by more and not gotten the record if he would have jumped in front too soon and wasted energy. Then someone would fuss about him making a dumb move. He tried to win it at the end. It didn't happen, but at least he got the record. That was probably the main goal for this particular race anyway.
