great run by Rupp, but he will not go sub 13 ever, too slow for that. But with his 5km outdoors now likely to be in the 13.08-13.12 range, I think he can very definitly go sub 27 which will make him a threat at WC's etc. Exciting stuff.

I know you are actually being positive, but Rupp has the indoor collegiate records for 3K & 5K and the american record for 5K. That means no one has ever run faster in college. Not LAGAT, not Kennedy, not Solinsky, not Teg. Two of these guys dipped under 13:00 and one of the others has already gone 13:04 and has plenty of running left.

Now let's put this into perspective, none of them ran faster in high school for 3K or 5K than Rupp, none of them ran faster in college indoors for 3K or 5K than Rupp. None of them OR ANY american EVER has run faster for 5K indoors than Rupp.

So knowing that how can we conclude that he will not do what he's already done at 5,000 meters TWICE in America and go on the set the outdoor American 5K record?????????

It is actually logical that he will. Considering that he just P.R.ed and set records the past two weekends he certainly doesn't seem to have peaked.

Considering that he opened his season with a 1:51 800, he doesn't seem to be losing, but in fact gaining speed. Could Kennedy do that?

He may never get 13:00, but I think he has several years to go for it. At least through the next olympics.

You hit the nail on the head. Too many of you on here just want to rip apart every guy that does something great.

You compare his age to Kenyans supposed age. There are two problems with that - the first is that we do not know their age for sure and the second is that a Kenyan is so far ahead aerobically at the age of 20 than most any American.

Why can't you celebrate these obvious successes. You may or may not like Galen Rupp but the kid is a beast. Awesome! In Beijing he ran VERY well. While he did not beat the front end, he had a good race.

Enjoy the fact that we are getting closer. Don't pick at everything. Quick riding the latest guy only to wait for him to fail. We have some very good young 1500m-5,000m guys coming up. Support them.

Did anyone see his postrace interview (video) on Trackshark?

If not, watch it. Especially if you are a Rupp hater. It will grind you how humble he is.

excuse me if I'm clueless, but there has been no mention of the 3rd chelanga guy. If 13:18 is so wonderful as a senior, how does a 13:19 as a freshman. I must be missing something.

The outdoor 5k is a much tougher record than the indoor 5k one. Go back and look at how many indoor 5ks Kennedy, Goucher, and the like ran ever. The 80s ran it but after that it is pretty slim pickings.I would have thought Rupp was close to having 1.51 speed in HS off his 4.02 mile pr. It doesn't seem like a huge increase. Of course that wasn't a peak race and who know what type of speed work he has one.It is great to see that he is dropping his 5k pr more this year than in all the years since HS. Hopefully he gets even faster outdoor.

It's been on several threads. I believe he's a "sophomore" but I knew of a Kenyan who ran for WSU and retired after his college career at the age of 35. At that point he had no problem telling people, because he already had his NCAA championships and degree.

Chelenga will probably be great, but what of David Kimani, Sam Kibiri, Joe Kapkory, and the one who used to wipe the track with Rupp, Rob Cheseret? It is not unusual for kenyans to succeed at the NCAA level and then go quiet after they graduate.

Fast "young" Kenyans are literally a dime a dozen, so there just isn't as much interest until they rise to the top of their ranks and remain there for a while.

A large part of the hoopla generated around Chelenga last fall was generated by Brojo predictions, who almost have a perfect record of underestimating Rupp. Rupp easily beat Sam at NCAA's despite a long summer track season and a short cross season.

Sam IS good, and still can win NCAA's but don't expect Americans to get too excited about that when there is American with a legitimate birth record in the race.

As far as him following Rupp the entire race and then getting dropped to 13:19, considering the way he blazed through cross killing people and setting the pre-nationals record it certainly worth mentioning (and has been several times) but not a huge point of interest.

Rupp said in an interview that he "pr'd" in practice recently running a 53 400, how many 1:51 guys do you know that have only run 53 seconds for 400? The point is, he has never really worked on the all out speed. Most high schoolers are running under 52 seconds on relay legs (many under 50 seconds) to get to 1:51. This is a guy who trained for long distance and now works on speed. He actually has upside on his speed.

I don't know about kennedy, but I know Goucher and all of those since him have run indoor NCAA's and even if they didn't run the 5K, they didn't run faster than Rupp in the 3K (he is the collegiate record holder). Considering that Rupp distances himself the further the distance goes up, and he's already ahead of them at 3K, it just follows that he could be faster than them at 5K indoor or outdoors.

It's not like Rupp has run a lot of indoor 5K's either.

Rupp has not raced a 5K in Europe (or even in a big one in the states for at least 3 years). Look at where Webb, Goucher, Riley, Solinsky, Kennedy, Teg & Lagat's outdoor P.R's came from! Rabbited european races.

I didn't make it clear, but what I meant was that he hadn't run IN a fast european 5k or even a fast US 5K in the PAST 3 YEARS.

Before someone else points out, yes he has run in outdoor 5Ks in the U.S. over the past 3 years, but not races that are set for 13:00 minutes or faster with a train of East Africans.

How many other American runners have been this fast at this point in their careers? 7:44, 13:18, 27:33 is a solid lineup. Teg ran 13:25 the summer after his 5th year, Solinsky hasn't run close to 7:44, Goucher went 13:11 summer after his 5th year...

Rupp's a reverse Alan Webb. An endurance guy who's starting to show a lot of promise at the "shorter" distances (1500-3K) after years of focusing on the longer stuff. And like Webb, he's much hated and mocked for both his success and unsuccess.

He's a 5th year guy setting all these records too after taking time off to strictly train. He's got more advantages than any other runner in the world. Kudos to Rupp, NOT. Also like Webb, he's known to run stellar time trials and then folds like a cheap lawn chair in a hurricane in championship settings. So many records, so few titles.
