Pete ran an 8:53.0 on a dirt track in Reedley in 1967. It was an intrasquad meet, the first meet of the season. That is our high school record that still stands today.

Same here. SI still covered track back then. Also had a picture of Liquori getting a handoff at Penn and a couple of other HS phenoms.
Recall seeing Romero in a leg of 2 mile relay (880 kids), for Old El Paso in the Boston Garden.
I was there teaching and doing some miles with Peter and the guys on training runs. I know of no 8:42 in practice or meet. There was an 8:54 in practice. Peter came very close to catching Liquori at the Cow Palace indoor. He for some reason held back lap after lap, and then just couldn't make it up at the finish.
I went to lemoore high at the time and ran in a few races he was in in cross country and track. The guy was really fast and consistent. The guy lapped me in the mile. Embarrassing. Some research in local hanford ca newspapers at that time would report on a local track meet where he ran 1/2 mile , mile, and 2 mile at the same meet with 3 fantastic high school times. Always wondered what happened after high school. I heard he had gotten a scholarship.
