My comments were answering the question posed and also correcting a lot of the factual mistakes that others have made on this thread! If you don't like the facts and want people to be miss- informed about the events surrounding the selection, then thats your problem.

Ok, so lets get this in the open:you aren't posting on this thread because you are continually on Coe's nuts and defending him like a crazy man, but because it is a sort of publc service. But I guess I shouldn't bring this up because it doesn't relate to the original question.

You are right about Cram finishing 8th in the 1987 World Championships. But since his glory days of the early 80s, I count three complete seasons where Coe was not ranked in the 1500 top ten - 1982, 1983 and 1987. For whatever the reason -- illness, injury -- you certainly CAN'T say they were good seasons for Coe. Coe also did not rank in the top ten in 1988, in fact Cram was ranked #1 that year.
Fact: Coe wasn't the only person to ever have his potential compromised by bad luck and injuries. It's part of the game of competitive running, plain and simple.
You can attempt to justify your arguments any way you want; using "facts", "statistics", or whatever else... you're still riding Coe's nuts.
And beyond that you use the exclamation mark far too often.
and how bout you complain about the Moscow 800m a little more...so what if he ran a 49.6 last lap if he hadn't ran in lane 2-that was his choice. So what if he could have won the race-he didn't, so that is that you obsessive f***. so what if he had set backs-they weren't nearly as great as the ones endured by Cram or Ovett. and yea! use the exclamation mark! a little more!

I never said anything about '82,'83 or '87 seasons!? Coe only ran 1 race in '87 and it wasn't over 1500m. So he DIDN"T have a season, so we can't really say it was good or bad. In '82 he only ran one 1500m, concentrated on the 800m, in between injuries, and ranked No 1 at the distance. '83 he was ill.
I was actually referring to the comment which stated:
"I think he had had several off-years in a row and at 32 was considered past his prime......the Olympics requires several races in a row and it's debatable whether Coe could have held up"
He probably was past his prime in '88, but his 2 off years in a row were early in his career, 82 and 83, and he was capable of putting 6 races together pretty well in '86.

Btw, I think my understanding of the exclamation mark is obviously more advanced than your use of grammar!!!!!! The kids I teach compose better sentences and have a fuller grasp of the English language. I'm certainly not going to take advice on matters of punctuation from that Canadian guy either.

He said he wasn't ranked in '87 because it was a bad season. Of course he wouldn't be ranked at 1500m (or any event) if he ran one 800m in May and then was injured for the rest of the season.
Yes it was bad for Coe that he couldn't run, but the inference was that he ran badly. He didn't run badly, he just DIDN'T RUN AT ALL.

Coe is not the greatest runner of all time, El Guerrouj, Bekele or Haile are. Coe is probably not in the top 5 Ovett and Cram were both certainly better.
Last time I checked Coe was the 2nd fastest 800m runner of all time, and has two gold medals in the 1500m.
His place in history as one of the top middle distance runners of all time seems beyond debate.

Actually "greatest of all time" is opinion. By definition we are talking about a value judgement. Perhaps you don't understand what that means.
But in the value judgement I'd love to hear the reasoning that puts someone like Ovett or cram ahead of Coe.
How many Olympic medals does Cram have? How about Ovett? Now how about Coe? Compare golds in particular. Winner is Coe on all counts
The only advantage Cram seems to have over Coe is a faster mile PR. Hardly makes up for the other PRs, world records and Olympic medals Coe has him, it seems. And Ovett doesn't even have that. Exactly what criteria do you use to rank Ovett over code?
Exactly. While it is true that everyone has points in their career that limit their potential, Coe did far better than anyone despite enduring just as many setbacks.
Going by his record of proving he deserved a spot on the team based on past performances, a far better case could be made for putting him on that '88 team.
Some people on here apparently think he was just lucky to win 4 medals and Ovett and Cram weren't.
deanouk makes some gossipy points that may or may not be true but his case rests on the coe performances, which are inarguable. if coe had been chosen at just one of the events, the 1500m, and he had been in great form at the olympics, as it appears he was, he would have had the chance to be the greatest ever, despite the fact that his 1500m times were pedestrian in comparison to morceli, el guerrouj and lagat.
incidentally, in looking at the 1988 1500m final--cram and elliott had their shot but not much of a kick--I noticed the 1972 5000m final video: is it a trick of the video or did Pre, having come back on Viren three times already, get pushed back or elbowed by Viren as Viren starts to make his final successful kick over Gammoudi(?)--check the video at about 13:06-13:09. Pre is going fast by Viren on the backstretch, then he doesn't cut over to block Viren on the inside, Viren squeezes through on the inside, and then on the turn Pre is going well past Viren again and this time it looks like Pre's momentum is stopped, contact seems to be there, and that same moment sees Viren accelerate as if from a push. Pre dies and is eaten up on the homestretch by a big kick from the third place finisher.
