Okayyyyyyyyyy, we got the Einstein's birth date mismatch.
Whoever created it, it's a good riddle.

Cool puzzle. At first, it looks like there's only 5 characteristics, but there's really six since the order of the houses matter. This is kind of like doing sudoku. Process of elimination is mandatory.
Personally, I was expecting it to be Mr. Plum in the Conservatory with the Wrench.
It took me around 15 minutes. It reminded me a lot of the logic problems i use to do in middle school math. You just have to use process of elimination and slowly work through it
My 18 year old daughter solved it just as I did, the moment she read through it.
Piece-o-cake.
and I don't have any pictures. :)
i did it pretty easily, but i definitely had to write it down. i couldn't have done it without the visual aspect.
how did you do it in your head?
he didnt do it in his head.
maybe the answer really isnt the german? everybody drinks water. water is in everything even coffee or tea. also the first house depends on which side of the street you are entering from. it could be the first house is all the way on the right. also if you were asian you would interpret the first house being on the right because that is how they read. maybe it is true that einstein made this riddle and none of the letsrunners have actually solved it. is it possible to solve this riddle by taking the clues from the drinks out?
I did it in my head and so did my daughter. I honesty thought it was easy.
If the answer is not German then I got it wrong, but the site said that the German was the correct answer so until I find out otherwise, my daughter and I got it right.
Hmm, I call BS.She read "through it" and immediately said it was the German guy? Either she knew the answer already (it's a pretty famous riddle) or she (and you!) just read the answers from the other guys in this thread.Geez, I hate it when people still feel the need to lie on an ANONYMOUS website.

Okay then post the quick steps you went through in your head
the riddle works from the left and the right. i don't think it would be possible without the drinks.
As God is my witness, I just read it and thought for a quick second and said it was the German. I thought is was kind of cool and printed it off and gave it to my daughter at dinner. She basically did the same thing. She read it and simply turned to me and said, "the german."
I don't know what else to tell you.
It says he wrote it early - as in early in his life.
Read it again.
You are reading it to say "AE wrote this riddle during the early 19th century." It doesn't say that.
You all failed a non-puzzle. Nice work.

Nothing. You basically already told us that both you and your daughter had no method for solving it and both had lucky guesses. There is no way to solve it with out some kind of organizational process.
wrong it only "works" from left to right. from the right it would change where the green and white houses are
since this is a riddle of logic, god might not be the most credible witness.
Then you did not solve the riddle. You just took a -lucky-guess. Since we know from the start that it's not the Swede, you have 1/4 chance to get it right, pretty good odds. The German is only mentioned at the end of the riddle so you naturally picked him.
Same for your daughter. If she can't explain her logic she just took a lucky guess, like my mom who is terrible at maths.

No offense but you're actually kind of dumb.
try it both ways. it works, i'm telling you. or just look up the zebra puzzle... that's what this is called. it works both ways. people make computer programs that can be used to find the answer.

asshole.
You guys are killing me. Look, we read it and processed it as we read. It is not that hard to do. My family and I love doing these kinds of things. I never really thought that we were any different than anyone else until tonight when I see how you all had to write stuff down. I have a tremendous memory and can usually process these types of puzzles fairly easy. You can call it a guess if you want, but evidently you didn't "guess" it. Why can't you just accept that we thought it through and stated our conclusion. Evidently it was correct. Get over it. Some people are smarter than others just like some run faster than others.
If you could solve it (really solve it, not lucky guess it) in 1 second in your head you would have previously noticed this ability, trust me. Same for your daughter.
You are both dense.
