Neither. They are born, reared and educated on pool tables in bars.
Haven't you ever seen that episode where the Homer, Mr.Burns and Willy go to Scotland?

It's all about attitude. In C/B/N you still live isolated lives in your flats. Americans are independent people. Germans are social people. Germans are different and like most societies want to live and mingle with others many times a day.
You are talking gibberish. I lived in Germany. My experience, in some ways they are more social, in some ways less so.Austrians have a similar culture/history to Germany - people are so social and neighborly there that they didn't notice some guy had kids who kept disappearing or the fact he kept a few locked in the basement.

And besides, you were making the point that we need isolated homes... how does an independent attitude translate into renting or buying exactly? renting or buying is about a way to pay for where you live and investment costs.

It's so sad that so many Americans like you respond so readily in a violent tone and manner. You cannot act that way in German society. In old world cultures the emphasis is on harmony and peace with others. Children are brought up to live amongst others and not to live in mental or physical isolation.
I didn't see anything 'violent' about what anEconomist said. Maybe it had an air of superiority in it, but no violence or anger even.
Be careful Old World, Americans love Uzis and carry automatic machine guns in the cars. anEcomnomist is obviously that type, an American too superior to be criticized.

I read a article this morning in the LA Times about the German economy and it stated that most Germans rent and the auto market is a huge market because Germans don't buy homes for the most part.
I am stunned , why don't Germans buy homes ?
Is this typical of all of Europe ?
It's a different economic model. In Gernany, I don't believe you get a tax break on the interest you pay on your mortgage. That makes it far more expensive to own a home.

Germans living in harmony and peace? WWII ring a bell?
I see, since you Americans cannot handle criticism, you change the subject. O.K. I will change with you, Vietnam ? Iraq ? Lynchings ? Numerous U.S. government police summary/roadside executions of Black Males each year ?
must be a problem with the English translation. i wasn't defending your accusation or comparing America or Germany. i was however completely calling you out on your our-German-culture-is-so-peaceful-and-accepting untruth.
... and for the record, i spend a good bit of time in germany and just got back (frankfurt/heidelberg mostly). i really enjoy the country and the people (those that are sincere and honest).

Not only do you not get a tax break but you also pay capital gains tax on your primary residence if you own it for less than 10 years.
Old World,
I currently live in Austria (pretty similar to Germany, right?) and find the culture, as a whole, cold and rigid. I have lived in Turkey and people could not believe I was going to move to such a cold and distant culture. I have many European friends who joke about how cold the Germans are. I try to judge people on who they are at the moment, not their cultural background. However, I have found many of these stereotypes to be true.
Also, I am an urban designer who believes in the benefits of dense living (public transportation, community, ecologically sound, eyes-on-the-street, etc). Thus, I am enjoying the set-up of urban life in Europe. But, to say that Germans like to get to know their neighbors and Americans live in isolated shells is simply incorrect. I am against the tragedy that is suburbanization in America. There are many things wrong with it. However, your assumptions about what Germans are and what Americans are are silly. American culture certainly is not perfect, but neither is any culture. Your pretty little picture of Germany is funny. There are many great things about the culture, but I don't see neighborliness as one of them.
Old World,
These trolls are liars who lie and say they live in Austria and Germany. They are Americans who need big guns and lonely living to feel secure. Just ignore them and watch their country enjoy an economic Depression any day now.

It would be good if this were the case in the U.S.
you are too funny. cold americans do not live well in italy or germany.
Well, Italy and Germany are two different places, aren't they?
I am not a cold American. I am a very open-minded and warm American. I am not going to get into an argument about one culture being better or worse than another. However, it is simply silly to characterize Germans as being social and neighborly (when the stereotype is the opposite). This is not to say that they are bad people or their culture is "wrong".
Anyway, I do live in Austria. I am not lying.
Also, any economic depression that hits the U.S. also hits the EU. So, unfortunately both the Old and the New World are going into a shitstorm.
Germans don't buy homes because they are strong people.
Hey troll watch ...
America will get pulled into the economic maelstrom but only after your beloved Deutschland leads the way ... it's already had one quarter of negative growth already and next Thursday we'll have confirmed what we already know ... Germany's the first to the recession pole.
