When you turn 24 your eligiblty clock automaticly starts.
As long as you have not enrolled in a University before then.
So if you are 24 and decide to start University your clock begins and you have the 5 years to compete. So theoretically you can compete up until you are 29.
Well atleast that is how the rule at my university was explained to us. Which made no sense seeing we were already enrolled and our "clocks" had started

Read the link provided above. If you do not participate in A SPECIFIC sport after your 21st birthday AND do not begin full time enrollment, you can be ANY AGE when you finally do enroll and still have 5 years to use 4 years of eligibility.
A perfect real world example are multisport athletes, football/baseball for example. A kid could go pro in baseball right out of high school spend 7 or 8 or 9 years bouncing around the minor leagues and then decide baseball isn't his gig. He could then enroll in any D1 school as a 25 or 26 or 27 year old freshman and have five years to use 4 seasons of football eligibility....this has happened in several recent, notable cases.

AUTOMATICALLY? Not true. If you do not compete in any organized sport either as an individual or a team, your clock doesn't start.

True, with the following caveat: any year after your 21st birthday in which you compete counts against you regardless of your enrollemnt status. In other words, no redshirting for you if you compete in any race during the 12 month window.
