1. Marketing. Go around campus and ask a student, or even a faculty member, when the next home meet is. Chances are they won't know
2. Most are too long amd have too much dead time between events. Heck even the kids in the sport get bored.
3. Students do not understand the sport. No scoring, events can change from meet to meet, etc. Even if the meet is scored it can be confusing to the spectators. Ex. asked of me many times. How can a team with only 2-4 athletes in a meet beat the other teams with full rosters?
4. Philosophy of competition. Spectators want to see an understandable team vs team competiton. The also want to be able to identify, attach, and/or Hop on the Band Wagon of successful athletes. However, in our sport is seem we avoid competition as much as possible (See the thread about the number of CC meets that is ok ot run). Imagine if most of the favorite FB, BB, or VB players only decided to only compete 1/3 of the season, and when they did, have of them treat some of those competition as a scrimmage. Not too spectator freindly.
5. Lack of rivalrys.
In order for this to change, our sport needs to improve the level of coaching (not saying there are none, just not enough to make a big change), better management of meets, a little more money, and a change in Philosophy of Competition.
