Are you sure about Ryun's repeat times? Why would a 3:51 miler be doing 440's at 70?
The mythology says that Emil Zatopek did his 60x400 (yes, sixty) at 60 seconds per, and that was a long time before Jim Ryun came on the scene.
Well I think he was still in HS so was only like a 3:57 guy:) You have to remember this was an aerobic workout for him. Think of it more like 10x1 mile at 4:40 pace with 3 min rest. Thats a pretty good tempo run (ok the rests are a bit longer than you might like and the distance is a little excessive). When we hear interval now a days we think really hard workout. Ryun did a lot of intervals which were definitely harder than easy runs but the pace wasn't super fast for a sub 4 miler.

If I were doing a comparable workout to Ryun's, my repeats would be in 80's - which actually sounds like a lot of fun (especially if I had teammates with me).
It begs the question: Has anyone here tried a similar workout? how many 400's did you get? And I do see a benefit of this workout. Ten miles worth of high glycogen metabolism. Sounds good for the 3k-10k.
I sometimes do 24-30X1/3 with 10-30 second breaks starting at tempo pace and ending around 5k pace for that last few. But not every week. It's a tough one.
It's not on the track though. I think that much running on the track is not a good thing, it leaves you open to injuries.
