My youngest son is Sebastian and we generally call him "Seb." I don't think my wife has ever heard of Seb Coe, but I convinced her Sebastian was a cool name.

Jordan? HORRible! Even Euphrates would be better than a name as overdone for both genders as Jordan.
Joan is strong and is more classic than Kara, Shalane, Deena, or even Lynn or Paula. I like it better, anyway. Think about it, the idea might grow on ya.
LoLo :D
Haha, I was just saying it as a joke because it was our neighbor's daughter in high school who suggested it (and of course, she runs cross country/track).
What you say is true. We are thinking about that one, but we also feel a name like Shalane/Kara is less common. Deena and Paula seem a little "old fashioned" though.
Thanks everybody for all the suggestions so far, I'll keep you guys posted.
if he be black, name him SUPRIZE SATCH-
the thing about the name jordan, is that most people now (and i know that can change) when they hear the word jordan think of 1. the great basketball player michael jordan. 2. a country in the mideast (which by the way way is hosting the world cross country championships in 2009).
You're covered if it is a boy or girl.
How about either Deeja, Marion or Yulia if it's a girl, or Tim, Ben or Trevor if it's a boy...
Cassidy
How about Zola?
I think Haile is a nice name

I was wondering how many replies it was going to take for someone to mention Cassidy! All the way to the second page, a little more than I thought.
Try to find a last name of a runner that sounds good as a first name.
Maree
Ryun
Coe
Ovett
Stahr
Meredith--1st recognized WR holder for 800m by IAAF
Dixon....just kidding
Madeline Manning only US gold medalist in women's 800m
We thought about calling our boy Radcliffe. Not for long, but we did think about it.
Ben if it is a boy and Marion if it is a girl. Good English names.
Think to the Future: WHEATING
Great name, for either gender
Ute (Pippig) or Sidgrun (Wodars), or even Renate (Meißner. Petra (Müller) works too.
If it's a girl, Phentermine, for a boy Stanozolol.
I say DON'T DO IT! Naming a person after a famous person is always a bad idea -- even if hardly anyone knows the famous runner you name her after, it still a bad idea.
How'd you like to be the one named after:
Barry Bonds
Pete Rose
O.J. Simpson
Britney Spears
Marion Jones
You can bet that as soon as you name her after that runner that that runner will be found guilty of using PEDs or tax evasion or whoring it up somehow. It's a bad idea. I see no positives about doing it. Also, you name her after a famous runner because you and your wife both like running -- NO PRESSURE there for the poor kid. Maybe she will be a violinist or a doctor and just hates running. She'll always feel a sense that she disappointed you if she didn't become a runner. I predict an eating disorder coming on. It's kind of way up there on the geek scale too by the way.
It really is a bad idea. Name your dog after a famous runner. Name your girl kid something that is strong yet feminine and sounds good with her last name.
