My older brother and I started in 1970 when we wanted to see if we could run a mile without stopping. Found out later the distance was nearly 2 miles (we were in 4th and 6th grade). Then we wanted to see if we could beat the school bus home everyday. We usually could by 10 minutes or more.
My bro ending up winning a state championship in cross country (I got down to a 9:17 two mile in track but no state title) and both of us still run today, 38 years later, ages 49 and 47.
41 years.
36 years.
first marathon at age 12, in June 1972 at Palos Verdes, south of LA.
I migrated through the course to a 5hr plus finish.
Before that I trained religiously for 3 weeks, running 2.5 miles each day.
My dad cooked me a big steak the night before.
By 4 miles in the race my calves were shot and it was walk/run Galloway style from then on.
They were dismantling the finish area by the time I pulled in.
The following summer was Frank Shorter.
ABC showed him jogging in the mountains with his buddies
and then he won so gracefully and I was hooked.
Never was any good, but it running has been my identity from then on.
just realized I've been at it for 30 years now! ballpark total milage at around 60k. maybe I could start a tangent to the thread whereby you not only tell how long you've been running but also how many total miles...
43 years. I don't PR at races anymore, but I do P a lot.
I started distance running in 1979. Unfortunately, in the last 29 years, I have only been able to run about 8 years.
I ran from 14 to 19 when a running injury sidelined me for 18 years. I then ran from 37-39 when a non-running injury sidelined me for 3.5 years. I can now run again at 43 and am training towards some lofty goals by the time I turn 50.
I started running at a young age, rarely have I missed a day of running and have been blessed with good knees and back. I am at 45 years of running. I look forward to my next 45 years. My first marathon was Washington Birthday in 1963 and I am at 118 marathons now though I never really tried to go for big numbers. When I started I remember guys about 40 and they were really "OLD" to us.
Started in 1951, so it's 57 years now. I'll be 70 next birthday. I never was good, and then after about age 40 accumulated injuries began to pile up, but I'm still good for 5-8 K daily.
I ran my first race in 1952, my first marathon in 1961, my last marathon in 1978 and my last race, as of now, in 2006. I have been a runner for 56 years.
Snap,Orville,56 years.
I remember you in Toronto before you went off to the USA and Igloi.
I have a race 9Km next weekend,so keep on racing if you are able,I say.
Grainger and Orville are the top dogs.
Sept 29, 1971 I joined my junior high XC team 37 years coming up.
30 years this winter. My first ed. of Runners World had Henry Rono on the cover. I ended up finding a copy recently on ebay - interesting to look back at all of the ads and such.
I ended up giving a presentation this week for one of the local running clubs on running injuries. One of the statistics that I presented was a comparison of injury rates from the early 80's to the early 2000's. Despite all of the footwear changes, we still see the same distribution of injuries - just as many knee, hip, lower leg injuries percentage-wise as we did then.
I was born a runner. But I didn't know it until I was 13.
Ran first race in '65. Full time training in '68. Forty years. Sad that I now shoot to hit the same time for my hilly 5 mile bike ride that I used to run. Someone suggested moving up in distance....If I tried to run 50-100 miles I'd be dead.
I guess I officially began running the day my dad made me sign up for the local road race. I might have run 25:0x for a short 5k. Today 8 years later I run the same time for 8k xc. We'll see how I'm holding up at 40 or 50 though...
I have been running for 2 years haha. I run a 4:28 mile and a 2:01 800. I am 16.
How are your knees after all those years? Were you able to train on grass and trails? You've seen the training shoe evolve. I started this addiction in the spring of '69.
Same. Hit 41 years last january.
