Can any dog break ALL of the men's world records from the 100m to the marathon?

Huskies are too slow to break the men's 100m and 200m records no matter how motivated.

It will have to be a border collie or perhaps a wolf. But how many trained wolves are there out there that would follow someone on a bike for a marathon distance. They might stop along the way and eat too many little kids.

My daughter's border collie is lightening fast and she didn't break the men's 100m and 200m records by very much at all. So I'm not so sure that a wolf could. A wolf clearly has the needed endurance, but perhaps not the sprint speed to break 9.6 seconds at 100m or 19.3 seconds at 200m. Only a few breeds of dog have the necessary sprint speed. Try your dog at 100m on a track some day.

2:04 marathon? That would be good for a gallowalking charity run dog. The real all around dog athletes are the sprint dogs in sled racing.

Check out the splits for the Open North American, a sled dog race over three days. I found the results for 2007:

Day one, Blayne Streeper's dogs set a track record at 57:59 over 20 miles. They come through 3 miles in 9:09 (a slow start considering the final time), 5 miles in 14:26, 9 miles in 22:16, 14 miles in 34:14, etc. The average pace over 20 miles is 2:54 per mile, and they are saving something for the next two days of racing.

Day two, Egil Ellis's dogs have the fastest 20 mile time, edging Streeper 59:47 to 59:55.

Day three, Ellis's dogs go 30 miles in 86:28.5. On the way, they split 25 miles in 75:33. That's an average of 2:53 per mile or 43.25 seconds per 1/4 mile for 30 miles. And if you don't think these dogs can't pick up the pace for significantly for an incredible 100 or 200 time, you're nuts.

Correction, day three was 27.5 miles, so that's 3:08 per mile, not 2:53 per mile. Streeper's 2:54 per mile for 20 miles on day one was faster, which makes sense...

No doubt a Border Collie is an awesome breed of dog. They were bred to do a job and they do it well. I have seen a half grown border pup herding bugs into a pile with his feet. They as a general rule are born with a lot of tractability which means are easily trained. They can run like the man says to if their feet hold up.

The Running Walker Hound is a breed of American foxhound. They weigh from 45lbs to 55lbs or so. Their foundatin sire was a hound called Tenn. lead and he was bred to English foxhounds to produce the Walker hound. These hounds are known among hunters to have the most endurance of any of the hound breeds. We regularly chase coyote with our packs and the race will last twelve to fourteen hours and no tellings how far they go.

If you had something that one of these hounds would chase each distance that you wanted to race him at then I believe several hounds that I know of could smoke bolt....now he's the MAN but one of my hounds and a buddys hound is the DOG

We houndsman are always looking to breed a better hound.And we have talked about freaks of nature for years concerning our hounds. Well I have a two year old here now that is a freak. He can haul ass for twelve hours not run half speed but he runs like the kenyans. We will be running him with fifteen dogs and he will run off and leave them chasing a fox or coyote. He can sprint and he can middle distance and he can marathon and he can ultra marathon. He must have a tremendous VVO2 MAX, Lactate threshold, and not sure what most of his muscle fiber is but maybe all in between slow twitch and fast twitch or equal of both. This dog could whip any man and I ain't just bragging on my hound.I have seen him striding out flying and when he lept the dirt road his strides were the width of the dirt road.That black basserd can do it all.Call Bolt and line it up.

I wasn't saying that only border collies could break the men's 100m thru marathon records, only that it was the only breed that I knew of that perhaps could to this -- and that not many breeds could do it.

It now looks like Racing Sled Dogs and Running Walker Hounds can do this as well, and perhaps even better than a working Border Collie. Still not sure about wolves.

Anyway the question poised by this thread has certainly been answered yes. I started this thead mostly as a spoof on the thread "Can any man break ALL of the women's world records from 100m to the marathon?" Conversely, I wanted to show that a female (a dog) could break all the men's world records.

If anyone has actually run a dog for on a measured marathon course and broken 2:04, I'd like to know. Best way is probably to measure a 1-3 mile loop with a measuring wheel and then bike it with your dog (in cold weather) multiple times with planned brief rests.

The top sled dogs have a VO2max of about 240 ml/kg/min so I'm sure they would have no problem with the distance events.

I just posted that wolves have been witnessed at top speeds in excess of 45 mph... that's over 20 m/s... do the math.

The guy before posted that the sled dogs covered 27.5 miles in 1:15 and change... so, yeah a dog has run faster than 2:04 for 26.2 miles.

in a rabbited race a dog might break the marathon record, but not in a championship race with different breeds in the lead pack.

In all fairness, the wolf would not be at top speed in the first 100 m of a run.

You need to set up a match race between Bolt and your dog.

my dog is more faster than yours.

and my dad is a police office so he will arrest you if you say yours is faster.

I live and work near Jackson Wyoming, my line of work (scout/wrangler for sheep/elk ..areas 4,5 and 10.. , fishing/hiking guide in the summer)..has given me the chance to view wolves first hand....

First off i know for a fact that many dogs, and certainly coyotes can and do out run them ...so long as there is no snow...they do cover large distances at a rate that i HIGLY doubt any human could match(considering were i work is mostly over 9000ft and rough)..

That said, they DONT chase game for miles as so many people seem to think...they actaully will give up the chase fairly soon if they dont find a weakling ...and then go look for easier targets(which is why they are a problem for some free range ranchers out here)....

Anyway...i think some studies on radio tracked Coyotes show that they actaully cover MUCH greater distances in their wanderings...and sometimes (say when chasing jackrabbits)...do give long chases..
