flanagan and goucher advance but not by much.
KG 7th 15:01, SF 6th 14:59, Defar 1 14:56
Flanagan 6th, Goucher 7th. I think Metcalfe hung on for 8th, at around 15:15. I imagine they'll all probably qualify for the final (top 6 plus next 3 fastest) since the first heat was slower.
Kara was 7th in the faster race. How many move on?
Flanagan came in sixth and advanced without a problem. Goucher had to advance on time--but all three Americans are in the final.

Flanagan, Goucher and Metcalfe all make it through!
Wow, 15:01 and advancing on time!!! Will that kind of an effort hurt her in the final?
3 Americans in the final!
Great stuff no matter how you slice it!
Yessssss 3 in the finals. I'm looking for the guy who was crying about how Fleshbitch was the one deserving the 5000 spot.

Great to see three Americans qualify in tough internationl competition. For those of us at work, can someone explain how SF/KG's race played out? I'm going to assume NBC won't be showing it tonight...
Also, was't Kim Smith slated to double 10k/5k? Anyone know the details?

Both stayed with the lead pack the whole race. I saw Goucher in the lead at least once, but Flanagan stayed back in the pack, biding her time. The lead pack steadily shrank over the course of the race, until they dropped Metcalfe with 1.5-2 laps to go. It was a tight group at the bell, with both Americans hanging on the back. As the pace got stiffer, the pack stretched out a little, and both SF and KG started to lose touch with 200 to go. They both kicked home pretty well, finishing 6th and 7th.
Metcalfe fought really well to stay close to the lead group, and managed to both PB and sneak into the final, having been sent to the Games as a conditional "rising star." Nice work for her!
Sorry, I didn't see the first heat, so I can't comment on Rhines' race.
Well done. Flanagan is in great shape.

Flanagan ran a much smarter race than Goucher. At the start, Goucher was in the front, and she stayed there through about 2k. Then she dropped about 3/4 back in the lead group, and then about 4k worked her way, on the outside, back up again. Flanagan was at the rear almost the whole way, usually only two runners behind her, and I think at one point just after 4k she drifted to last for a brief moment. With 700 to go, when the action heated up, she moved and attached herself seventh in a group of seven, with Goucher sixth. At about 190 to go she passed Goucher fairly easily and really made no attempt to move on the other runners (whether she could have passed anyone is hard to tell, for they were going pretty fast). One could not have scripted a better performance for her. Almost always on the rail and qualifying on place with the minimum effort. Rhines was with the lead pack in the first heat, but in the last lap had no chance to stay with the five who finished ahead of her.
Sounds like Flanagan ran a smart, controlled race. Should be a great final...
It sounds like all 3 American women did what they had to do in their own way to make it through. Goucher and Flanagen were never that far apart, they ran just about the same effort. Rhines sounds like she ran the easiest of all of them. Congrats to all 3!
Just curious, has 3 women ever made it to the final before in the 5k? This is great for US distance running!

Gee, Mr. Marin let's see you run that fast.
