what size?
I put 850 on a pair of adidas novas. I do almost all of my running on hard sidewalk. I'm in brand new NB 765's now. It is soooo damn nice going from an overly beat pair of shoes to brand new ones.

But you won't find those in any running stores.
Some of the racing flats. The Vapor's midsole is very durable, the Cubato as well.
my shoes are size 12

Benji Durden told me that, back in the day, he would put 1000 miles on a pair of shoes, have them resoled, put another 1000 miles on them and basicly repeat this until the shoes were falling off his feet.
I may have said this, but it wasn't true. I would get 1000-2500 miles out of a pair of shoes. But I wouldn't resole them. There were free after all. I also trained mostly on trails so they lasted longer. The real problem was the uppers would rot out from the sweat etc.
Benji, you still puttin the miles on the Shox nz?
Oh, by the way, I'm Matt, who used to work for Jack & Carol at Runners choice, big guy, shaved head. I now live in Oceanside CA and wish I was back in good old Boulder. Have you heard how J&C are doing in Vermont? How is Amy? How is Chuck doing with the store?
Just for the record - it is not the lack of cushioning that gets people hurt, it is the way the shoe becomes disfigured over the many miles. It's actually the fact that these shoes have too much cushioning that can become overly compacted much use areas (example, under forefoot near big toe), and therefor the foot is being positioned in that one spot, putting more pressure on areas that are not supposed to bear all the weight, which fatigues the muscles in the legs, back, etc.
That is the problem, if they would make the sole one piece of rubber, or whatever, and flat, their would be not problem.
Lack of cushioning, that is for people that really don't understand the mechanisms going on down their. That is why I just kind of give people a funny look whenever they throw their 14 ounce pair of shoes away and say - the cushioning is all gone. No, they still have more shock absorption than the many types of flats many people on this message board cite that they wear (and me too - I put my mileage in on the adidas supernova comp, a great shoe, but running 3 workouts a week in flats is roughly 20-25 miles in flats).
We have heard that Jack & Carol are doing ok. We haven't communicated as much as we should. The store is different. It feels more like a mall store. I guess it is doing ok.
I'm still putting the miles on my Nikes. Last week I was flirting with 70. I'm going slow though 9:00-10:00.
Amie and I ran the Colder Boulder 5K (a revived race that the Bolder Boulder folks put on) this past weekend I was 20:31 and amie was 24:39 (her fastest in several years). All things considered a good race for both of us.
What are you doing in California?
Good to hear that you two are well. 70 mpw is getting up there man. You forgot to mention the 7milion miles a week you put in on your bike.
I came to Cali to get a different view on the world and throw my hat back into racing triathlons. Everyone kept saying that So Cal is the place to be to train but I think they were on massive amounts of drugs. The cycling is OK at best. There are very few good pools for swimming. The running is for crap unless you feel like driving 30-60 minutes in terrable traffic. That's the bitter me. Its really not THAT bad but I sure dont want to be here for a very long time. Once the racing gets started it will get better.
Tell all the folks at Runners choice that I said hi.
By the way, I have to say that the picture that I have of you in the Oly trials with your "focus" haircut and beard is one of my all time fav's. Any time I need a little focus I think of that pic.
Have a great one and thanks for writing back

I'm constantly amazed by peoples ignorance. What is so hard to believe about me running 3500 miles in a pair of shoes? Yes i had to duct tape them after about 2500 but as long as they stayed on my feet i was fine. I have NEVER been injured so why should i buy a new pair of shoes. I guess i must "have the lack of brains" because i don't want to go waste money on a new pair of shoes. With that out of the way, does anyone know where i can get a pair of Adidas Cubatos?
I personally don't understand how you do it. Maybe it is just my foot strike, but I have 4 races on my Cubato's, and I can guarantee you that if I put 200 miles on them, I would wear clear through the outsole. I would love to be able to train in light weight trainers/racers, but shoe companies always put thin or blown rubber outsoles on them, and I am running on the midsoles in less than 300mi.
Jason Rexing once put 8126 miles on a pair of shoes. He was chasing an angry Kodiak bear back and forth across Canada. Eventually caught up with the furry beast and we got a chance to finally see how his shoes fared. Needless to say, his feet were quite bloody. But Rexing didn't even notice. He was rather delighted in the whole experience.
oops, wrong thread?
I must have put about 2000 miles on a pair of Brooks John Walkers, back in the day. For a time, it was my last wish to be buried in those things.

Way ahead of you. He and I have had that discussion. Question: I've done most of my long distance training (runs up to 24miles) in GG Park and have never run at the Marin Headlands. About how far is it from the bridge and how long does it take to get there?
I once ran all the way from here to there in a single pair of shoes!
The highest mileage I ever put on a pair of shoes was about 1500 on the old Adidas TRX trainers. (Blue and silver) The midsole was polyurethane. They were great. Of course they quit making them. I was a freshman in high school and was already getting frustrated with the shoe companies and their need to change models every six months. I had over 1000 on a pair of the Nike Epic prior to having them re-soled. The guy who did the re-sole, however, sanded the midsole unevenly and the shoes were biomechanically unsound and unusable from then on.
Used to train exclusively in racing flats and regularly got 6-700 out of them. Now I use Nike trainers and rarely get more than 3-400 when the air bags blow. Anyone else have problems with airbags? I must go through 80% of my shoes until the air bag blows.
If your airbag pops, send them back to Nike. They will give you a new pair. You get a # off the website and mail them to NIKE. I have sent back some pretty worn shoes, and gotten a new pair every time.
Guess I'm going to have to pop the air in my shoes. Gosta get me some free shoes.
