I believe that eclipses Mike Aish's DII 10k record. Congrats to Scotty on that!
I saw Scott race when he was a prep, and even then knew that he would be good. He's gritty as hell and not afraid to lay it down. He's tempered his killer instincts with a bit of racing wisdom (not to mention a fair amount of training) over the last few years, and now he's killing it. Not surprising to anyone who's watched him develop.
I look forward to watching his career continue to develop.
And all this from a kid who started as a 5:01 1600 and a 11:01 3200 as a freshman in HS (and that was with a decent amount of running under his belt). He ramped it up just a little each year. And (according to him) got a little more dedicated each year. He hasn't reached his potential yet. There is still more room for growth in all aspects of his training. He will be there come July 4th in Eugene. Just watch for him.
Just over a year ago his PR was just under 13:50 for 5000 (inddors). Last night he went 13:59 and 13:49 for his A standard.
Once again, great job Scott.

Dude is over 90 seconds off the world record. Let's get real here. Rupp is younger and has gone faster. Big deal. Do you sycophants realize that he would get lapped by a group of the top runners in the world? I give credit for him being the top DII runner, possibly could win DI, but save your salivating for something of real merit.

Sure, he might be 91 seconds from the world record right now, but it is the potential that excites people. The guy has improved more than 91 seconds in the last 2 years, and who knows how much more time he can drop. His progression indicates he could get a lot closer to some truly world class times (not that Olympic A standard is not world class on some level, but for now, I would not count him as a threat for an Olympic medal).

I remember you telling me at the Bay Area Top 8 meet in 2001 that you had a 2 kids that were decent, right around 5 min. I remember saying that I had the same type of thing going on. One of my guys broke 5 for the first time at that meet, then never ran faster again (quit during cross country of the next season). The other guy ran 4:31 as a soph and 16:32 as a Junior then stalled out. It is a great credit to you, Gary, and to Scott that he has kept on improving, steadily over time.
I really think that transitioning from your system to Gary's has been a big factor for him. Essentially, he has had 9 years with a pretty consistant training approach. That cannot be overlooked.

It's only been 8 years, but yeah it has been consistent training. Solid miles, long tempos (threshold) and no real injuries. The biggest thing is he is fearless when he races. When he was a junior he went out in 59 for a prelim heat in our league 1600 finals just to see what it felt like cause he knew that at some point he would break 4 min for a mile. He ran low 4:20's the hard way. He believes he can achieve any goal he wants.
The other guy you mentioned that was a freshman with him went on to run 4:23 and 9:37. Very solid and is still running in college. Scott's progression has been amazing and is not typical, but I think the moderate miles and longer intervals/tempos is the key to getting a kid ready for college running. Gotta think long term and not just load up the intervals while in high school.

I remember that league meet. I never thought he'd be the best of that generation when I left Northern California in 2003. The smart money was alway on Leal or Ghebray. His success is a testament to hard work and some seriously latent talent.
The question is, in my mind, whether or not to turn pro after next fall (don't think he's won an NCAA XC race yet). What does another spring running conference meets, or even the NCAA D2 championships do for him? Spend 2009 chasing times in Europe, not outkicking kids from Humboldt and UC San Diego. Few college seniors have been successful at both.

I tend to agree with that statement. The problem is to get kids to buy into the philosophy when they see other kids who have loaded up on intervals pulling away from them in races as frosh and soph. This is especially true here in the valley where relatively few kids go to college (lowest rate of attendance in CA). You try to tell them about consitency and long term development and they are like, "yeah, I'm improving but these other guys are kicking my butt".

A few people have asked about an All Time DII list for the 10k. The sports info director (I believe) from Abilene Christian has been compiling and updating lists for DII through the years. He's had them for sale at several of the past few NCAA meets. I have an updated copy that i purchased from him last Spring. Anyhow, here's the DII All Time list from what he has (adding Scotty's time from last night).
