But anyway, how about negative splitting each mile for Derrick? Something like 4:34-4:29-4:22. The guy doesn't even own an anti-gravity treadmill!!

The 2 mile at Nats is gonna ROLL!!

Pre ran his time on July 31. Does that make him lame as well?

Derrick's running 13:55 in a high school race where he not only ran by himself, but spent much of the last mile dealing with lapped runners is most impressive. While it's exciting to think about the prospects for the future, sometimes we forget to enjoy the moment. The future will come soon enough.

You are clueless. The fact that he ran it in August is more impressive, and is not lame. Most good hs runners settle for their state meets, and the lucky few the national meets. Rupp looked beyond that to some real meets, peaked for the summer instead of states or nationals, and stuck his nose in some competition that some thought he had no business being in and shocked us all with his 1337. It's a extremely sad day when people like you put down American Runners who want to be great, who put themselves out there to do what other runners aren't doing. You are the lame one.

This was his DEBUT 5000. Very impressive indeed. This deserves a front page mention here at this web site.

Mrr82 is right. We don't need people like you putting down runners who have put it all on the line. Go back to HS and live your glory days in dual meets. That's where it's at right? That's why we are so competitive with the Africans right? Let's peak for May to win state! That's what it's all about right?

In a sense - this is not at all a surprise. Running 13:51 at Detweiler Park in Peoria just portended all sorts of promise. A tick faster than Craig Virgin - with Ritzenhein,, Pre and Lindgren likely the greatest HS XC runner of all time - and 5 seconds faster than the very, very impressive Tom Graves. I was not a great high school runner - only a decent one - but did run under 4:10 several times - with a best of 4:08 in the mile in high school - and turned a 14:20 at Detweiler in a frankly pretty hard effort on a brisk but decent day weatherwise. Sure beat my effort by a bunch, as well as folks like Jim Spivey - who ran near 14 flat. Query how much speed work he will do this spring - if he does (and not suggesting that this is the best for a high school runner), I could see him running 4:00 for the mile. Hope he is patient and enjoys college running - 14:00 is a barrier of sorts - and it is great to break it, especially all alone in a high school race.

Not to take anything away from his performance (which is phenomenal) but having runners lapped runners to work off of can actually be somewhat helpful. It's much easier having people ahead of you, whether you are lapping them or not, than running on the track all alone.
