Yannis Korous challenges Dean Karnaze

The problem here is that Dean is a millionaire while YK can barely afford to make it day-to-day.

This makes YK very angry.

I do not think Dean is anything special, but he deserves his money and fame. He does stunts (for a good cause, to boot) that earn him press. Nothing more than David Blane or Kris Angel.

There is no reason to be angry at Dean. He is good at PR.

Listen... There are plenty of actresses who are better actors than Kate Hudson, but Kate Hudson is pretty and has connections. No one complains that she gets more press than some stage actor on Broadway that is probably unbelievable*.

* I realize there are probably those that do complain, but whatever...

Dean Karnazes is the Magpie of Ultra Running.

The problem we have with DK is he has everyone eating out of his hand for being the 'best' ultra runner in the world (or a big shot at it) when he is nowhere close to it. I am not in the least jealous of Dean basking in fame attributable to his false accolades. It would be no better than puffing myself up like former poster "magpie" did with his bogus PR claims of 13:59 and 7:50 on Letsrun some years ago, when he was really a 19-minute 5Ker. But it's a disservice to the reputabily of the sport, somewhat like a drug cheat. However Dean has taken his ridiculous claims to the streets and capitalized on them. He also taints the image of truly elite runners by claiming to be at their level. He's not, never was and never will be anything close to an elite runner. At 74 Ed Whitlock would have handed him his ass and I know Yiannis would dominate Dean like no other if Dean accepted this challenge. Dean knows it too.

When I read that some ultra stud was challenging DK, I was initially all about it. But reading the terms, they are totally ridiculous. If he had challenged him for the honor of it, or even for a public admission that the other is a better runner, that'd be fine; but no one could be expected to run against a bunch of people with millions of their own dollars at stake and nothing to gain from it.

I want DK to enter a bunch of legit races and as he gets smashed, his faux reputation will fade.

For the record, I am a fan of Dean Karnazes. I have several questions about your post:

First, Who is "we" that you refer to?

Second: You state Dean is "basking in fame and false accolades"

"his (dean's) ridiculous claims"

that Karnazes claimed to be the "best ultra runner in the world"

and that he (Karnazes) claimed to be at their level "elite"

I have never heard or read about Dean Karnazes saying or writing any of this nonsense. In fairness to Karnazes, Please provide your source for these "claims" that you are making so they can be verified. I doubt that you can or will.

Ultra Runner--your quote on Yiannis and Dean is old news--it's 3 yrs old--nothing ever came of the challenge.

In 2007, while being interviewed about the political aspect of having an Olympic Games in Beijing on a local San Francisco radio station, Dean Karnazes claimed to have qualified for the 1996 US Olympic Marathon Trials. He said he was slower now that he was older. It may have been NPR.

Until you dig up that interview, we won't believe you.

Dean karnazes said that he ran a 2:20 or 2:22 marathon to qualify for the 1996 OT, at 35 years old? I seriously doubt he said that. First time I've heard that and never saw it referenced anywhere. In fact, he said after the last marathon he ran in his 50/50 quest, NYC 11/5/06, which he finished in 3:00:30, it was his fastest ever.

Please provide the station that interview was on and when, or who did the interview. Give us something that can be verified. Until then, its just more unsubstantiated "facts" put out there by folks who hate this guy for whatever reason.

Let me correct Karnazes' age. He was born in '62 making him 33 going on 34 at the time he supposedly qualified for the trials.
