Man, so many people like me! I think my only chance at anything is the marathon olympic trials. Right now I work for the insurance industry. Pretty cake work (sitting on the phone and infront of a computer all day) and descent hours. Easy to get 90+ miles in a week (just gotta sacrifice a little of the personal life)
I managed to train 21-25 hours/week for tris and work a full time job. This is roughly 50mpw run, 200-250 bike, and 4 hours swimming. I tend to think of training in hours, not distance. I equate 8 miles=1 hour running (it varies), but that means in my terms I was "running" the equivalent of 160 miles (time wise) on the low end. It can be done!
I work a govt. job, 40 hours/week. I am lucky enough to "flex" my time a bit - always has to be an 8 hour day, but my start/end times can vary. I would combine workouts and use the bike as my means of travel to get in the miles. I would bike to the pool, swim, bike to work, work 8 hours, bike home, then go run. This could get me 40 miles on the bike, 1 hour in the pool, and an 8 mile run in one day. However, I'd have to get up at 4:30 a.m. to make it all work. I didn't do this every day. I HAD NO SOCIAL LIFE, and I am single.
Being able to run/bike to work really helps. I'd suggest a gov't job that begins at 7 or 8 am. That way, you can log some serious miles after work (hey, you're out at 3:00!), or do 5 easy in the morning and show up at 8:00. You'll rarely work overtime. Benefits will be good. Pay may suck. Getting off at 5:00 or 6:00 at night is too late. By then you want to eat dinner and go to bed. You must get off work by 4:00 - good luck!
Im serious about this deal-if anyone is serious as well about pooling together for the greater good and achievement of many let me know. I live in God Country(Eugene) and would entertain any scenario to help myself and fellow runners.
What are your best times and your current shape? What are you training for? I am in VA; too bad you're all the way across the country. I would love to shack up with other runners to cut down expenses and get in better training.
How is the running in Eugene? I know, I know, it's "God Country" but where I am living I can get on soft surfaces every day of the week and never have to run on the same course more often than once a week. That's really nice.
