Thanks for the article. With the dismantling of the Chinese sports machine after the Olympics, sports in China will probably go the way of the East German/USSR sports machines after the Wall came down. Particularly the East Germans. Once incredibly dominant, German athletics stars are few and far between now. Even with government support and their huge population the Chinese only dominated specialty sports like weightlifting, diving, gymnastics -- sports that only make a world splash during Olympic years. With the economic boom and no real professional sports in China, there's going to be a real lack of sports stars. Why sweat when you can be sucessfull in business. And while the Chinese may not be genetically talented for sports, they are great at business.
On the other hand, take Kenya. Distance running talent continues to pour out because, despite decades of foreign aid, the country continues to be poverty-ridden, corrupt and now, war-torn. Athletics remains one of the few ways out.
