A clarification about my son Ryan Shay. He was not poor.

Doesn't the spouse usually get all intellectual property rights when the other spouse passes away. So technically, wouldn't that mean that Ryan's wife would have to sign off on how his name is used and how the money for the fund is used.

Dear Mr. Shay,

Thank you for clarifying Ryan\'s status as much as you could. Whether Ryan was rich or poor monetarily is not what is important to me. What is important to me is the richness he brought us as a person, that is invaluable.

I\'ve benn running marathons for only a couple of years but as I got interested I began to notice Ryan\'s ads in Runners World magazine and adopted him as someone I admired and wanted to \"be like him\". He became my idol as it pertained to running. I never heard of him and of course new nothing of him as a person. I\'ve grown to know him much more over the last two years. I know the void you must feel in your heart as even I do.

I want you to know that I will be dedicating my next years running which will include Grandma\'s in Duluth and the TC Marathon in the Twin Cities to Ryan and you, his family.

You don\'t know me but I\'d like to thank you and Ryan for being an inspiration.

May God bring you peace as life does not always have all our our answers.

Jeff Drenth was an elite distance runner who died in 1985 while training with Athletics West in Eugene. I believe he was about 24 years old. He also had a known heart condition. Jeff grew up in Charlevoix, MI - not far at all from East Jordan - Ryan Shay's hometown. Jeff's brother Walt is the head xc and track coach at MSU.
