I'll agree. Amazing. Weird how in his high school days he was a better miler than a 2 miler...though he was very good at both of course. He's certainly proven to be a great marathoner.

He ran 2:09:02; if he had not celebrated to the end he is easily at 2:08:40 or so. The first two miles took over 11 minutes - running them at 10:00 would not have slowed his finish much, and similarly a bit faster in the next three or four miles would have not been very taxing. Those things get you down at least close to a sub 2:07, then you account for the difference between the courses and you are down to a 2:05. As malmo said, this was a stunning race, and many running guys still do not realize how stunning it really was/is. So maybe this race is only worth 2:06:30, the pace of his last 37+km (the extra difficulty of the course and the celebration are likely the equal of extending that pace back to the first 5k). That is not far off of the AR, and without having anybody for the fastest portion of that race.
Note one of the things that make KK's race so great is that it WAS as race.

I don't know...I realize the time doesn't come near to cracking the top 100...but in how many of those races were guys running 2:07:xx just getting dragged along behind faster guys, crossing the finish line absolutely beat. I don't know if you've seen the video, but I have never seen anyone look that comfortable at the end of a 2:09 marathon, especially one where the first 5k was run in about 17 minutes.
Again, I didn't mean to imply it was one of the top 5 best of all time, but this kid can definitely go 2:06:xx based on this race, and probably 2:05:xx.
Hall's time was the 44th best performance of the year according to the IAAF stats. That's well under the top 100.
I think what Hall did (and Tergat when he set the world record) serves as examples of how to run a great marathon...Negative split!
I did see the first 5k, but I wonder if the top pack went out out at 15:00 if he would have gone too or just have been patient? If he would have gone out that fast I don;t think he would have been able to negative split like he did.
That said he ran over 2 min. slower for his first 5k then he did his fastest split. I think that shows that to many competitive runners go out too hard and fade!
Impressive run considering he was all alone. This guy is the real deal and I think has now confirmed himself as one of big boys in the marathon.
He run that 59 minute half and everyone thought it was a fluke.
He backed it up with an impressive marathon in London and has now destroyed a good quality field in the trials.
Pace from 20km to 40km was 2h05 pace, without the celebration he could have kept this pace up for the last 2km.
Not as impressive as Da costs second half split but impressive still.

Quick related question for Malmo: If you were in Hall's shoes, how would you prepare of the upcoming Olympic Marathon? More specifically, would you run a Spring marathon or shut it down and race shorter races and train like a man possessed between now and the Olympics? Just curious on your take. Thanks in advance.

Saying Hall had a good day and might not have another run like it is a possibility, but since he is 3 for 4 at big road racing events in 2007 (not to mention his AR last year), I think it's safe to assume he will impress us again in the future.
For whoever said he should have run faster than 2:08 in London is an idiot. It was his debut for crying out loud!
Even just changing little things like not celebrating and waiting till the end to really put the hammer down (no 14:28 5k from 30-35) would improve his time by at least a minute. Then take him down to a fast course (like London or Berlin) and he's at 2:07 low even by a conservative estimate.
The kid is good, and he can definitely go faster. Let's just wait and see how fast though. It's not really worthwhile to get too technical in predicting times.
I won't put words in Malmo's mouth (I'll leave that to the other 10 Letsrunners) but judging from his comments about Kastor and the # of marathons she raced, I suspect he will say skip the spring marathon.
He can not run 2.06...

It's clear that his primary motivation was to run to win. the race unfolded perfectly for him. It will be interesting to see how he handles the heat and pollution with a (potentially) fast start. I won't pretend to be objective though. Fat boy has a point, I got all worked up for WC for Webb and it was very disappointing.
One things for sure though - we have some legit contenders for the first time in a while and its nice to be excited and optimistic about a distance greater than 1 lap.

Not much you can do when you get sick the week of the biggest race of your life. He still finished less than a second outside a medal; impressive given his condition at the time.
2:07 in Berlin is much different then winning Olympic Gold. Gezahegne Abera is one of the greatest... It will be interesting to say the least.
If I was Hall I would not do a spring marathon, there is no need.
