Some might say that I am not that bright, but that did include Med School.

Amen. Isn't it always the same old shit. The people that are capable aren't willing and the people that are willing aren't capable. I would give my left nad for a chance to be on one US team, and 20 years of my life.
All you people do is complain. Sacrafice this, sacrafice that. You don't know the meaning of the word sacrafice. I ran 231 miles last week, all in singles. I still don't consider this much of a sacrifice, as I work 50 hours a week as a mailman. And I do my mileage quick, because it is boring as hell, and the less time I am on the streets, the better. So don't give me this 140 miles or 161 miles, as that is nothing. Talk to ME after you get above 200
But why?
i wasnt complaing about sacrifice, i was trying to make the point that sacrifice isnt the same as hard work. it isnt the sacrifice that makes you good, but the hard work, and if you can get in the work without missing on anything else than thats what counts. anyone can sacrifice, but thats not what is going to get you to the next level. and i dont consider anything that i have done to get where i am at a "sacrifice" even though i am no where near national class or anything i have been fortunate to be able to make some great trips and meet some wonderful people through my running and those experiences far outweigh anything that i had to do to achieve them.

You win the pissing contest.
I am unworthy...
(by the way, do you think Sell is whining?)
Maybe he was just smart enough to figure a way to stretch it out, sort of like Zonker in Doonesbury. Anyway, Not Good Enough, I thought that wasa tremendous post. In a way, it was what I was trying to say, but you did it better.
Not Good Enough,
I'll bet that if Sell thinks he is making a sacrifice, it is something like the life that you have. The wife, the kids, etc. That's what people often think of as "getting on with your life".
The grass is always greener, no?
The whole thing just doesnt seem to have the value in the US that it once did. That lifestyle used to be pretty cool and lord knows I tried to stretch it out as long as humanly possible, but yeah, there does come a point at which you think that a world that pays a .250 hitter millions and a 28:00 10k squanto doesn't deserve your efforts any longer...
It made me think about EPO or HGH, but it wasn't worth not being able to look myself in the mirror
Agreed to those who say that it just didn't get any better than going to class, taking watered down tests and running.
People seem to forget that most of us are in this sport not just because we have a talent for it but because we enjoy it, its a pleasure in our day to day lives. the opportunity to pursue our passion 24 hours a day 7 days a week would be amazing. And anyone who is in that position owes it to the hundreds and thousands of people who would love that opportunity to be the best that they can be.

Wrong. They don't owe us jack.
Sorry to be so blunt, waz, but I really think that's a load of crap. Nobody owes us anything just because they have talent.

I am over 40 years old and was never good enough to be a part of the Hansons Program. I just don't understand the word "sacrifice" that everyone keeps throwing around. I don't see why training full time and travelling all over the country and some of these guys the world is a sacrifice. I did a search on Brian Sell and found that he has been to China, Japan, Belgium, not to mention all over the US just because of his ability to run. At 41 years old I have been to none of those countries and probably will not be able to afford to until after my kids graduate from college. I will be 55 years old then. I feel like I put my life (ability to travel the world) on hold to raise a family. Enjoy the here and now and quit trying to act like you are giving something up. I have about 8 guys from college that I still hang out with and every one of us wish we were still in college. It was the best 7 years of my life. However, while in college I couldn't wait to get out and start a family and be part of the work force. While in college I thought I was sacrificing so that I would have a better life. Little did I know that it doesn't get any better than that. Enjoy the opportunity of what you have right now. I wish I was Brian Sell and am envious of his lifestyle. I am a podiatrist in Fort Worth Texas. Good luck to all of you athletes and enjoy.
Not enuf:
If you are 40, than you realize that when you left college, unless you were male or able to run for Athletics West, there was no free rides. Many of the AW athletes worked part-time jobs. anyway
You certaintly are enuf - you are a podiatrist. Now I don't envy the Fort Worth part, but are you ever willing to give us free foot advice?
there is this crazy guy who does a marathon every day. Wakes up at 4 thirty in the f***ing morning and ends about 11. I shit you not. He did like 100 over marathons a year. But of course his avg time is 3 hours and a bit. Seriously can you imagine if this guy started doing his workouts faster, and tempos. Read it on yahoo. The article had something to do with genetic superiority cuz he is still going strong with all that miles.
