I coach in college, where we do 10K for XC, and it's not unusual this time of the year to see 800 and even 400/800 types doing the same workout as 10000 guys--very different athletes.
If we do something like 30X200 with ~45 sec like Coe used to do or 6X300 fast--things we do for speed later in the season--the 800 types with stronger anaerobic systems have the advantage, and the long distance specialists need more rest to run anywhere near the same pace (they can do more of these, but nowhere as fast with the same rest). But if we do 4X2000 with 3 min or 8X1000 with 2 min (things some here might recognize as Kostre workouts), the advantage goes to the aerobically-trained guys with superior lactate clearance.
Different athletes respond differently to different workouts, and adjusting this is part of where the art of coaching comes in. It's important for a coach to realize that one size DOESN'T fit all.
